“Tripp” Joye III
Milbourne L. “Tripp” Joye III, 25, of Clemmons passed away Saturday morning, May 3, 2008, as the result of a car accident on Frye Bridge Road. Tripp was born June 4, 1982, in Charlotte. He was a graduate of West Forsyth High School and attended Cape Fear and Forsyth Technical College. He was employed by Silk Road Technologies as a salesperson. Tripp had a passion for the drums and was in the drum line at West Forsyth High School. He was in a number of bands including The Flaming Skunks, Auto Passion, the Silas, Red Orchestra Radio and most recently, Anything on Fire. Tripp is survived by his father and mother, Milbourne and Linda Joye Jr., of Clemmons; his sister, Meagan Joye of Charleston, S.C.; his paternal grandmother, Margaret Spaulding of Columbia, S.C.; his paternal grandfather, Milbourne Joye Sr. of Gainesville, Ga.; his maternal grandfather and grandmother, Kenneth and Ann Flinchum of Greenwood, S.C.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 6, at Clemmons First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robbie Phillips and the Rev. Steve Foster officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Mason Charles Payne
Mason Charles Payne of Clemmons died Friday, April 25, 2008, after a long illness. He was born July 3, 1922, in Washington, D.C. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in the Battle of Monte Cassino, Italy. After the war, Mason began his career with the federal government at the Department of State, where he met his future wife, Jennie Darks. His assignments took his family to Greece, Taiwan, and Miami. Mason also served in Panama, Morocco and Vietnam. He retired in 1978 and settled in Winston-Salem, where he and Jennie became members of Konnoak Baptist Church. After moving to Clemmons, they joined Cavalry Baptist Church. Mason was known for his keen sense of humor. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid reader. He loved the ocean and his yearly vacations to the Outer Banks. He is survived by his wife, Jennie; sister, Gertrude Hampson of Norwich, England; sister-in-law, Connie Skidmore; his four daughters and son-in-law, Jennifer and Jack Oehme, Jessica Allen, Jeremy Nakkas and Jeffrey Bing; seven grandchildren; seven nieces; and five nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 10, at Cavalry Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. D. Ray Hamilton and the Rev. Gary Byrum officiating.

Neva Rose Hutchins Peddycord
Mrs. Neva Rose Hutchins Peddycord, 94, of Clemmons Village II died Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Peddycord was born May 31, 1913, in Yadkin County, a daughter of the late Herbert Hutchins and the late Annie Lou Caudle Hutchins. Mrs. Peddycord was retired from Zsabo Foods and was a member of Heritage Hill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Peddycord; son Kenneth Peddycord; grandson Charles Peddycord; four sisters; and three brothers. She is survived by her children, Joyce P. Shields and husband John Jr. of Mocksville; Kathleen P. Wilson of Raleigh; Calvin Peddycord and wife Pat of Winston-Salem; and Carolyn P. Myers of Winston-Salem; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; three special friends, Jack Carter of Winston-Salem; Madeline Blizard of Clemmons Village II; and Eugenia Howard of Clemmons; and a special niece, Georgie Shermer. The funeral service was conducted Friday, May 2, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Pastor Jennings O’ Neil and the Rev. Ray Burke officiating. Interment followed in Clemmons Moravian Graveyard. Carl Dillard Wray
Mr. Carl Dillard Wray, 77, a resident of 201 Fryes Creek Lane, Clemmons, formerly of Thomasville, died Friday, May 2, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 10, 1931, in Davidson County, a son of the late Henry D. Wray and Ora Nicholson Wray. Mr. Wray was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was owner and operator of Wray’ s Home of Thomasville. He was a member of Fair Grove United Methodist Church and also attended Mount Tabor United Church of Christ. Mr. Wray was married to the former Bobbie Everhart, who died Dec. 30, 1999. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Nawassa Spaul. He later married Lucille Hanes, who survives of the home. Also surviving are his children, Joy Wray Tucker and her husband, Roy, of Columbia, S.C.; Toni Wray Jones and her husband, Michael, of Greensboro; Tim Wray and his wife, Shelia, of Thomasville; Penny Wray Trotter and her husband, Rick, of Thomasville; and Pam Wray Sink and her husband, Steve, of Thomasville; stepdaughters Stephanie Allred and her husband, Rick, of Lexington and Valerie Osborne and her husband, Clint, of Winston-Salem; 10 grandchildren, Nicole Childress and husband Daryl, Ben Goins and wife Emily, Alex Ball, Tiffany Jones, Shelly Jordan and husband Nick, Regan Sink, Logan Allred, Kendal Allred, Keaton Osborne and Larsen Osborne; and three great-grandchildren, Audrey Childress, Ella Claire Goins and Benny Goins III. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 6, at Fair Grove United Methodist Church in Thomasville, with the Rev. Elise Kennedy, the Rev. Jimmy Norred and Tim Wray (Mr. Wray’ s son) officiating. - Frank Cole Nicholson, Jr.
Mr. Frank Cole Nicholson, Jr., 62, Clemmons, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, April 27, 2008.
Mr. Nicholson was born in Winston-Salem, February 13, 1946 son of Frank Cole and Ione Arrington Perry Nicholson. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Clemmons Moravian Church for 22 years, serving on the Board of Trustees.
Mr. Nicholson was a senior internal auditor for Krispy Kreme, a Piedmont Aviation Credit Union Committee Member, a City of Clemmons Zoning Board Member, and had formerly worked for Piedmont Airlines/U.S. Airways.
Surviving are his wife, Marianne Mackey Nicholson, four daughters: Heather Nicholson Vlachos and her husband Ilias Vlachos, Meghan Ione Nicholson, Jill Nicholson Wesley and her husband Michael Wesley, Anne Cole Nicholson, three granddaughters: Mary, Marianna and Lenia Vlachos, three sisters: Jan Nicholson Assimos and her husband Dean Assimos, Mary Nicholson Walton and her husband Dave Walton, Lauren Nicholson Scott and her husband Kevin Scott and one brother, Tom Nicholson and his wife Kristi Nicholson, step mother, Audry Nicholson and many beloved nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Clemmons Moravian Church by Rev. John Rainey and Rev. Neil Routh. Burial followed in the church graveyard with military rites by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard.

Robert Wayne Denning
Robert Wayne Denning, “Bob”, died Thursday, April 24, 2008, at his home on Jonestown Road in Winston-Salem. He was 64 years old. He was born Aug. 22, 1943, in Riverside, N.J., the only son of the late Charles Donald Denning and Dorthea Emma Kumpel Denning. He was a graduate of Wake Forest University and was employed by several companies during his lifetime, including Wachovia and Bepco. He also worked as a stockbroker. Having previously lived in Lewisville and Clemmons, he was a resident of Winston-Salem for the past several years. Carol Copple Denning preceded him in death. Surviving are a son, Robert Brian Denning, and his wife, Jeannie; and daughter Christina Denning Strickland and husband John; and four grandchildren. Sister Judith McCurdy of Chapel Hill and sister Nancy E. Cook of Middletown, N.J., also survive him. Bob loved to garden, cook and do woodwork. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Pine Grove UMC. Hayworth-Miller Funeral Service is assisting the family.

Anne Edith Magness
Anne Edith Magness, 77, of Clemmons died Thursday, April 24, 2008. She is survived by her husband of nearly 59 years, William “Bill” C. Magness; sons, Steven Jay and David Scott (Linda); daughters, Lynn Magness Basler and Julie Lorraine; eight grandchildren, Kyle, Ryan, Rachel and Daniel Basler, Caitlin and Michael Magness and Nicole and Anthony Mauro; two brothers, Floyd Eugene Collins and John Anderson (Carol); numerous nieces and nephews; and Jake. She was preceded in death by her mother, Eugena McNeill Sims. In addition to being a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she dedicated her life to serving others. Anne’ s smile lit up a room. She was an active volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She served on the Morris County School Board of Education and was an elder of Morris Plains Presbyterian Church. She was a New Jersey American Cancer Society volunteer of the year. Locally, she had volunteered for Hospice and Palliative CareCenter of Winston-Salem; Centenary United Methodist Church Sunrise Ministry; and Wake Forest Baptist University Medical Cancer Support Services. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Clemmons United Methodist Church. - Lewis Edwin Hubbard
Lewis Edwin Hubbard, 82, of Winston-Salem, passed from this life Saturday evening in the Palliative Care Unit of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-three years, Emma; four sisters, Betty Kate Carroll of Fayetteville, Orretta Honeycutt of Godwin, Florence Dowd (and husband Bill) of Fayetteville, and Janice Mobley of Stedman; three children, Lewis E. Hubbard, Jr. (and wife Diane) of Advance, Bruce R. Hubbard (and wife Marsie) of Winston-Salem, and Beverly H. Godfrey (and husband Brant) of Clemmons; six grandchildren, William A. Hubbard (and wife Heather), Matthew J. Hubbard (and wife Meghan), Mary H. Lischke (and husband Jonathan), Elizabeth R. Hubbard, Brant H. Godfrey, Jr., and John-Lewis H. Godfrey; and three great-grandchildren, Haley M. Hubbard, Joshua C. Hubbard, and Sydney M. Hubbard.
Lewis was born February 11, 1926 in Stedman, North Carolina on the family farm the son of Willie James and Carrie Williams Hubbard, the seventh of twelve children. After his graduation from Stedman High School in 1942, Lewis married the former Emma Cleveland Brown, and the couple embarked on a lifetime partnership of entrepreneurship and service. After brief stints farming and working with the Veterans Administration, Lewis moved to Winston-Salem in 1946 and founded Hubbard Real Estate Company. He worked part-time at the Zinzendorf Hotel for the use of a desk and a telephone. The real estate industry became Lewis’s second great love, and he engaged himself in every aspect. Over the following fifty-eight years, Lewis sought associates and partners who possessed integrity, ambition, and ability. He established firms engaged in real estate brokerage, residential and commercial land development, insurance, construction, construction-lending, property management and building supplies throughout the area.
Lewis’s personal, civic and professional commitments have included service on the boards of trustees of Fairview Moravian Church and Salemtowne Retirement Community and the Moravian Theological Seminary in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; as a director of the city boards of North Carolina National Bank and Lexington State Bank, the Better Business Bureau, the Consumer Credit Counseling Service, the North Carolina Association of Realtors, the Salvation Army, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
Lewis was a past president of the Winston-Salem Board of Realtors and the Multiple Listing Service. He was honored as the Realtor of the Year, an inaugural member of the Thomas A. Lambe Hall of Fame, recipient of the A.R. Tuttle Memorial Award, and of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Winston-Salem Homebuilders Association. He also served on the Board of Presidential Advisors of Campbell University, which honored him on May 13, 1996 as the recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. Lewis’s dear friend and President of the University, Dr. Norman Wiggins, presented the honor with these words: “Algernon Sydney Sullivan was described by a friend as one who reached out both hands in constant helpfulness to men. It is therefore fitting and with great pride that Campbell University bestows the 1996 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award upon a man who exemplifies the same high ideals, Lewis E. Hubbard.”

The family will receive friends at Salem Funeral and Cremation Services on South Main Street Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
A funeral service will be held at New Philadelphia Moravian Church, 4440 Country Club Road Wednesday afternoon at 2:00, followed by a graveside service at Salem Moravian Graveyard.

William Revere Kennedy
Mr. William Revere Kennedy, 83, went to Heaven Friday, April 4, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 6, 1924, in Surry County to the late John and Jeannette Woodle Kennedy. Mr. Kennedy was a member of Worship Assembly. Preceding him in death was Nellie Holcomb Kennedy. Surviving are five sons, Bill, Jerry, Bruce, Tony and Danny Kennedy; daughter Mary Belle Spach; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Fred and Lee Byrd Kennedy; and a sister, Rodena Macemore. A graveside service was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 7, at State Road Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, with Mr. Bill Teague officiating. Walter Lee Hobbs Jr
On Monday, March 31, 2008, Mr. Walter Lee Hobbs Jr. passed away at Forsyth Medical Center. Walter was born Oct. 16, 1919, in Columbus County to the late Walter Lee Hobbs Sr. and Olla C. Hobbs. Walter enlisted in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. He served in World War II, fighting in the Solomon Islands, receiving a Purple Heart for his heroic efforts during combat. After the war, Walter graduated from N.C. State University. He became an agricultural expert, living in South America. Later in life, he worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as the county executive director for Forsyth County. Surviving Mr. Hobbs are his wife, Lula Paul Hobbs of the home; and a son, David F. Hobbs, and wife Karin of Clemmons. Full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., at a later date. Vogler and Sons Funeral Home in Clemmons is assisting the Hobbs family.


Alberta Ratledge Giles
Alberta “Bert” Ratledge Giles, 77, of Clemmons passed away Sunday, April 6, 2008. She was preceded in death by her high school sweetheart and husband of 47 years, Jay Giles. She was born to the late Spurgeon and Biddie Miles Ratledge on Jan. 11, 1931, in Forsyth County. She was a member of Parkway Presbyterian Church. She is survived by, and will be greatly missed by, sons Everette Giles (Pat) of Merritt Island, Fla., and Alan Giles (Karen) of Winston-Salem; daughter Elease Giles of Clemmons; grandchildren Candice Alridge, Jeremy Giles and Kelly Giles; great-granddaughter Rachel Alridge; brother Alvin Ratledge (Marcie) of Advance; sister Shirley Sanservino (Fabio) of Inverness, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, at Vogler and Sons Funeral Home on Reynolda Road, with the Rev. Dan Wilkers officiating. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The Giles family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening, April 8, at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road. - Clifford Arnold Roberts
Clifford Arnold Roberts, 64, of Winston-Salem, N.C. went to be with his Lord Sunday, March 30th, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center. Cliff was born April 2, 1943, in Buncombe County, Asheville, N.C. and lived the past 38 years in Forsyth County. He was a 1961 graduate of North Buncombe High School and attended Western Carolina University. He was an Air Force Veteran. He retired from Flow Automotive BMW as Business Manager in 2006 and enjoyed traveling in his motor home with family and Golden Retriever, Toby. He was a member of Clemmons First Baptist Church, where he served on numerous committees, as Deacon and loved to sing in the choir. Mr. Roberts was the son of the late Talmadge Dewey Roberts, Sr. and Emma Faye Cowan Roberts. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Talmadge Dewey Roberts, Jr. and John W. Roberts. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Fredia Bailey Roberts, and son Stephen Arnold Roberts, wife Amy and two precious grandsons, Nicholas and Austin Roberts of Matthews, N.C., a sister Euleen Roberts Edwards of Weaverville and sisters-in-law: Pat Roberts and Joyce Roberts of Asheville as well as several nieces and nephews. He was the Godfather of Brooke Cobbs and self-proclaimed grandfather to Summer Best. In addition, Lori Crump, Emily and Ross Ward, Joel and Auburn Morrow, Nicholas and Patrick Lyons brought him joy as he watched them grow from children into very special young adults. The funeral service will be held Wednesday April 2nd at 10:00 A.M. at Clemmons First Baptist Church with the Rev. Robby Phillips and Rev. Christopher Roberts, nephew, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers are Gene Best, Jimmy Dull, Louis Crockett, Ray Brown, Dennis Ward and Frank Crump. Honorary Pallbearers are: Floyd Cox, Joe Nelson, Royce Porter, Al Webb, Lloyd Burris, Charles Williams, Bailey Cobbs and the Genesis Sunday School Class.

Kent Mathewson
Kent Mathewson, 90, of Bermuda Village, died Monday, March 31, 2008 in Forsyth Medical Center.
Survivors: 3 sons, Worth (Dr. Margaret Thompson) Mathewson of Amity, Ore., Kent Mathewson II and wife Kathleen Kennedy of Baton Rouge, La., and William
C. (Cheryl L. Cunningham) Mathewson of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and a grandson and a granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mariana Worth Mathewson on July 16, 2000; and by 2 brothers, Park Mathewson III and Clarke Mathewson.
A service of memory will be held Thursday, April 3 at 5 p.m. at The Church of Ascension in the Fork community with the pastor, the Rev. E. Sealy Cross,
officiating. Entombment will follow the service.

Lora Cayton Hassell
Lora Cayton Hassell, 87, of Jacksonville, NC, died on Friday, March 28, 2008 at Liberty Commons in Jacksonville. A funeral service was held on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home Chapel in Jacksonville with the Rev. Lawrence Cole officiating. Burial followed at Onslow Memorial Park.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Hassell and her daughter, Lillie H. Blanchard.
Mrs. Hassell was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Service Star Chapter 225, Order of the Amaranth, Peace Court No. 18 and the First Baptist Church in Jacksonville.
She is survived by her son, James Carl Hassell of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Roy S. Cayton of Gloucester, VA and Holland Cayton of Windsor, NC; sister Gladys Tyson of Roper, NC; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Garfield Aldine Ridgill
Mr. Garfield Aldine Ridgill, 82, formerly of 1060 Mount Zion Place, took his eternal rest on Friday, March 21, 2008, at Clemmons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Clemmons. Mr. Ridgill, known to his family and friends as “Booster” or “Cornfield,” was born May 25, 1925, in Manning, S.C., to the Rev. Garfield and Maybell Pendegrass-Ridgill. Mr. Ridgill served in the U.S. Marines from 1944 to 1946. He was a retired self-employed brick/stonemason and a member of Pleasant Union Primitive Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Odessa A. Ridgill; three sons, Dennis, Edward and Michael Ridgill; two brothers; three sisters-in-law; seven brothers-in-law; and two grandsons. Mr. Ridgill leaves to cherish his loving memory his children, Wandella Ridgill-Rice (Wilbert); Gail and Janice Ridgill; Pamela Williams; Richard, Jerry (Beverly) and Kenneth Ridgill; Anthony Springs (Lydia); Arnold Springs of Winston-Salem; and Alfred Springs of Charlotte; sisters Beatrice Kelly, Doretha Mack and Sarah Ridgill, all of Winston-Salem; sister-in-law Thomasine Hawkins of Lewisville; 22 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Mr. Charles Emory Fishel, 76, of Winston-Salem passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Oct. 5, 1931, to William Austin and Viola Catherine Jones Fishel. He was raised in the Friedberg Moravian Church congregation and attended Davidson County schools. Charles graduated from Arcadia High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On Nov. 13, 1954, he married Hazel V. Robertson who survives. He was employed by Sealtest Dairies and Bilt Rite Parts. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Winfred (Jean). In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Timothy and Howard; his aunt, Ann N. Jones; his brother-in-law, John (Jane) Robertson and Dalton (Ruth) Robertson; and several nieces and nephews and cousins. The funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, at the church, with Pastor Dave Kindy and the Rev. Jimmy Newsome officiating. The family would like to extend their thanks to Kate B. Michael Stephen Fox
Michael Stephen Fox of Clemmons died unexpectedly Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born to Fairene N. Fox and George C. Fox on Nov. 24, 1956, in Davidson County. After graduating from North Davidson High School, Mike worked at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. until his retirement. He will be remembered as a loving son, nephew, cousin and a terrific friend to many. He was preceded in death by his mother in 2004. Mike will be especially missed by his loving dog, Brandy, who was his constant companion. Surviving are two aunts, Lois Nifong of Winston-Salem and Thelma Leonard (Raymond) of Lexington; and three uncles, Russell Nifong (Nancy), Harold Nifong (Beanie) and Arthur Nifong (and friend Brenda), all of Winston-Salem. A graveside service was conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, at Parklawn Memorial Park, with the Rev. Dave Carter officiating. The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff of Forsyth Medical Center who tried diligently to save Mike’ s life, as well as his family physician, Dr. Barry Seltzer of Winston-Salem Healthcare. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Forsyth County Humane Society or a charity of the donor’ s choice.
