Obituaries for April 9, 2009

- Christopher John Scharling
Christopher John Scharling (C.J.) died unexpectedly March 30, 2009, at the age of 23. He was born April 20, 1985, to Janet and Eric Scharling, attended Lewisville Elementary School and Hanes Middle School and was a 2003 Honor Graduate of West Forsyth High School. He was a member of the National Honor Society, loved to play his guitar and to snowboard in Colorado, and attained the rank of Fifth Degree Black Belt in Karate. C.J. attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He was a confirmed member of Shallowford Presbyterian Church. C.J. was a beloved son. He was handsome, smart, funny, kind, and generous. As a child and youth he always had a sparkle in his eye and a ready grin. He loved animals and had many special pets through the years. He made friends easily and was a good friend. He was always ready to help someone out. He brought much joy to our lives. C.J. leaves behind grieving parents, Janet and Eric Scharling of Lewisville; grand-parents, Yvonne Scharling of Winston-Salem and Paul Webb of Rome, Georgia; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends; his loving girlfriend, Jessica, and her son, Nathan, for whom he cared deeply. We will miss him more than we can ever express but we know that he is free and that we will one day be reunited with him in Christ Jesus. A memorial service was held at Shallowford Presbyterian Church on Saturday, April 4. A private interment of ashes took place before the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to AARF (animal rescue), 311 Harvey Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Mark William Formby
Mark William Formby of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away in his sleep at home on Sunday March 29, 2009 at the age of 37. He leaves behind his lovely bride of 8 years, Karla; and two beautiful children, Alexa, 5 years & Jacob, 19 months. Mark was the faithful son of Bud & Becky Formby of Clemmons, NC. He was the loving brother to Kim Carraway of Ft. Myers, FL. The respected son-in-law of Dennis and Marielos Soto of Costa Rica. Mark was loved by all who knew him. Mark lived a fun and interesting life. He loved to travel and fish, loved music, taking pictures, cooking, fixing and building things, and shooting his guns. He was very good with his hands and loved to work. The most important thing Mark enjoyed was his kids and spending time with his family. A funeral service will be was held on April 4, at Hayworth-Miller on Silas Creek with Pastor Jeff Brown and Pastor Juan Carlos Suarez officiating. Burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. Memorial donations will be appreciated & accepted at any Wachovia Financial Center in the names of Alexa Denise Formby or Jacob Andre Formby.

Victor Manuel Morillo
Victor Manuel Morillo, 92, passed away Monday, March 30, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Calacali, Ecuador to the late Jose Vicente Morillo and Rosa Alejandrina Castillo on September 25, 1916. He owned and operated a hotel and several restaurants for nearly 40 years. Mr. Morillo had a passion for soccer. He was a father of eight children and loved his family very much. Mr. Morillo was a loving husband, father, grand-father, and great-grandfather. Preceding him in death were two sisters, Ana and Teresa; one brother, Julio and a granddaughter, Priscilla. Surviving are his wife Lucita; eight children, Ruth Tsiptsis (Milton), Alex Morillo (Brenda), Patricio Morillo (Allyson), Carlos Morillo (Patricia), Rocio Rocha (Pedro), German Morillo (Cynthia), Paul Morillo (Paulina), and Sofia Pizano; ten grandchildren, Magdalene, Victoria, Manuel, Armando, Lucia, Ysabel, Nicholas, Mateo, Paulo, and Pedro; two great-grandchildren, Alexa and Sophia; also surviving is a brother, Carlos Gonzalo and three sisters, Mercedes, Blanca, and Laura. A mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, April 2, 2009 at Holy Family Catholic Church, with Rev. Tri Truong officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Holy Family Catholic Church 4820 Kinnamon Road Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Lonnie Sizemore
Mr. Lonnie Sizemore, 53, of Clemmons, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 4, 1955 in Hamilton Co., OH to Mary Baker and Ford Sizemore. Mr. Sizemore was employed with Hayward Pool for over 10 years. He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Bud Sizemore; a sister, Kay Sizemore; and a step-granddaughter, MacKenzie Davis. Surviving him is his mother of Liberty, IN; his wife, Vicki Lamb Sizemore of the home; a brother, Gene Sizemore and wife, Sharon of Liberty, IN; two sisters, Lena Carlyle and husband, Bruce of Martinsville, IN and Louise Long and husband, William of Oxford, OH; a step-daughter, Lorrie Davis; a step-son, Todd Port and wife, Carrie; four step-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandson, all of Richmond, IN. The family received friends April 2 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. A Funeral Service will be held in Liberty Indiana.

Oscar Lee “O.L.” Williard, Jr.
Oscar Lee “O.L.” Williard, Jr., 81, died unexpectedly at his home in Lewisville on Wednesday, April 1, 2009. He was born on October 28, 1927, in Winston-Salem, to Oscar Lee, Sr. and Ethel Macy Williard. Mr. Williard was a 1944 graduate of Gray High School and a Korean War Veteran. He retired from Gravely Tractor Co. after 22 years of service and was a faithful member of Trinity Friends Church in Lewisville. Mr. Williard was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Juanita W. Smith. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Margaret Jessup Williard; a sister, Rebecca W. Reeves and husband, Robert; a niece, Betty Jane Smith; and several cousins. A Funeral Service for Mr. Williard was held Friday, April 3, at the Frank Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. Interment followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Friends Church, P.O. Box 506, Lewisville, NC 27023.

Edith Hutchison Tyndall
Edith Hutchison Tyndall, 70, of Lantern Way, Kannapolis, and formerly of Clemmons, died Monday, March 30, 2009.
Mrs. Tyndall was born October 15, 1938 in Wadesboro, NC to the late B. D. Hutchison and Faye Houser Hutchison. Mrs. Tyndall was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl H. Tyndall.
A memorial service was held Friday, April 3, 2009, at Bethpage Presbyterian Church. Rev. Daryl Baker will officiate.
Survivors include her son, Arlen Burney and wife, Karen of Kannapolis; two daughters, Elizabeth “Beth” Pinska and husband, Kirk of Kannapolis and Karen Nash of Wingate, NC; brother, Benjamin Thomas Hutchison of Covington, GA and six grandchildren.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that memorials be donated to Meals on Wheels through Bethpage Presbyterian Church, 6020 Mooresville Road, Kannapolis, NC 28081.

Waughnel Lawrence Pfaff
Waughnel Lawrence Pfaff, 88, passed away Sunday, April 05, 2009 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Forsyth County to the late Marion B. and Mamie Faircloth Lawrence. Mrs. Pfaff was a member at Boyer’ s Chapel Church of Christ and retired from Wachovia Bank. Preceding her in death, was her husband, Phillip Edward Pfaff. Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Ryan (James) of Lewisville; son, Phil Pfaff of Atlanta, GA; two grandchildren, Michael Cole (Angie) and Randal Cole; also surviving are two great-grandchildren, Jesse and Austin Cole. A Private Graveside Service was held on Tuesday, April 7. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care Center 101 Hospice Lane Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to send special thanks to the staff at the Oaks at Forsyth for their love and care over the past seven years and to Hospice for all their care during this time.

Maggie Mae Wood Pope
Mrs. Maggie Mae Wood Pope, 90, of Loblolly Drive, Lewisville, formerly of Wilkes County died Saturday, April 4, 2009 at Britthaven Nursing Home. Funeral Services was held Tuesday April 7, 2009 at Bethany Baptist Church with the Rev. Sammy Taylor, the Rev. Tommy Mathis and the Rev. Hillery Wood officiating. Burial will be in the Church cemetery. Mrs. Pope was born February 4, 1919 in Wilkes County to Ira and Sarah Harrold Wood. Before retiring, she worked 40 years for Glenn L. Martin Aircraft. Mrs. Pope was a member of Bethany Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Taft E. Pope. She is survived by: two daughters, Linda Davis of Marlinton, WV, Sarah Gail Duszczak of Jacksonville, FL; one sister-in-law, Glenna Wood of Hays; and several nieces and nephews. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’ s choice.

Patricia Leigh
Sprinkle Sellers
Patricia Leigh Sprinkle Sellers, went home to be with her Lord and Saviour on Friday, April 3, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was formerly of Clemmons and King, but had spent the last 14 years of her life as a resident of Springwood Care of Forsyth. Pat was born in Forsyth County to the late Clyde Edward Sprinkle and Lula Hazel Stokes Sprinkle. She was a graduate of West Forsyth High School and attended Appalachian State University in Boone. She was employed by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company until her illness. She was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church, and as a teenager and young adult, she sang and toured with Upward Bound. She was an avid UNC Basketball fan and enjoyed NASCAR sporting events. Ms. Sellers accepted her illness with courage and resolve and we feel blessed that she was a part of our lives. She was preceded in death by her parents; a loving brother-in-law, Steve Ryan Moser; and special cousins, Jimmy Herman, Ronald Sprinkle and Donald Sprinkle. Surviving are her loving children, Kelly Sellers-Dinger of King, Brian Edward Sellers of Macon, GA and Kimberly Leigh Sellers of King. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Hayleigh Jade Dinger, Adam Lee Dinger, Kyle Xaivar Sellers, Draven Michael Sellers and Lilyann Renee Sellers; sisters, Barbara Sprinkle Moser of Lewisville and Clydene Sprinkle Sparks and her husband Wayne, all of Mocksville; nieces, Mellyn Myers, Renee Sparks, Kristin Sparks and Sherri Sparks; four cousins, Delores James, William “Billy” Sprinkle, Mary Hennesee, and Thomas Lowder; one special aunt, Kathleen Sprinkle; and special friends. Also surviving is her ex-husband and the father of her children, Burney Edward Sellers of King. A Celebration of Life Service was held Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Christopher Burcham officiating. The family wishes to thank the staff and friends of Springwood Care and the staff of Forsyth Medical Center for their care and concern. In lieu of flowers, memorials be made to The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 1401-B Old Mill Circle., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Michael Jay Craver
Mr. Michael Jay Craver passed away Thursday, April 2, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County on August 7, 1957. Michael was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Claude Craver. Surviving are: his mother, Violet Craver Wilkins; wife, Starr Bennett Craver; three sons, Michael Paul Craver, Joseph Albert Craver and Dustin Lee Craver; four grandchildren, Andrew, Andrew, Austin and Charles; four step-children, Brandon, Jason, Jeremiah and Brittany; five step-grandchildren, Gracie, Tyler, William, Matthew and Josie; two brothers, Thomas Craver and Larry Craver (Sharon); and one sister, Brenda Smith (Rick). A Memorial Service was conducted at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 6, at Harvest Temple Church of God with the Rev. Floyd Vaught officiating.

Ruth James
Mrs. Ruth James, 84, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 2, 2009, while at The Oaks at Forsyth. She was born March 12, 1925 in Iredell County to J.P. Weatherman and Amanda A. Tilley. Those left behind to cherish her memories: include her husband of 67 years, E.C. James, Jr.; daughter, Lydia James (Charles Nooe) of Greensboro; son, Skip James (Vicky) of York, S.C.; grandchildren, Trentt (Amy) and Kinsley (fiance Cheston); and great-grandchildren, E.C., V and Ryder James. A special offer of gratitude to Frank and Shirley James for their loving care during this time. A Celebration of Life Service was held Monday, April 6, 2009, at Vogler and Sons Funeral Home Clemmons Chapel with the Rev. Dave Wood and the Rev. Dr. Todd Holt officiating. Burial followed at Farmington United Methodist Church in Farmington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Kinsley James Medical Fund in care of Lydia James, 6506 Portrait Drive, Greensboro, NC 27410.

Sidney V. Gunter
Sidney V. Gunter, 81, passed away quietly with his family beside him at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem on Friday, April 3, 2009. Mr. Gunter was born October 30, 1927 in Pineville, West Virginia. He was the son of Hobart and Ina Gunter. He was proud of his West Virginia heritage. Many of his fondest memories were as a youth in the West Virginia hills. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He was preceded in death by his parents and oldest sister Lucille Stewart all formerly of Pineville, West Virginia. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Rebecca Gunter. She was the love of his life. One daughter, Elizabeth Gunter-Woods, and her husband, Duane Woods of Lexington, NC. His beautiful granddaughter, Sydney Elizabeth Woods who he loved and cherished. His brothers, Harry Gunter and wife, Renva of Abingdon, VA; James Gunter and his wife, Charlene of Pineville, WV; Tom Gunter of Oceana, WV; sisters, Mary Morgon of Pineville, WV; Kitty Childress and husband, Joe of Glade Springs, WV; and Shirley True and her husband, Richard of Sacramento, CA. The family of Mr. Gunter would like to thank the following people - their neighbors in Clemmons for their friendship, many acts of kindness, and invaluable assistance during his illness; Kimmel and Patty Parker of Claypool Hill, VA for a lifetime of friendship; Dr. Antonius Miller and his staff at Wake Forest University Comprehensive Cancer Center. Despite a grave prognosis, their dedication to combating lung cancer allowed my father to devote seven years of love and affection to his beloved granddaughter. Finally, a heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House for the comfort they provided my father in his final days. Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 5, 2009 at Vogler and Sons Clemmons Chapel. Interment followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Dane Scot Masten
Dane Scot Masten died on Wednesday, March 25, 2009. He was born on November 14, 1963 to Nancy Hart and Toby Masten.
Private services were held in Thurmond, NC, and Springfield, Missouri.
