He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-three years, Emma; four sisters, Betty Kate Carroll of Fayetteville, Orretta Honeycutt of Godwin, Florence Dowd (and husband Bill) of Fayetteville, and Janice Mobley of Stedman; three children, Lewis E. Hubbard, Jr. (and wife Diane) of Advance, Bruce R. Hubbard (and wife Marsie) of Winston-Salem, and Beverly H. Godfrey (and husband Brant) of Clemmons; six grandchildren, William A. Godfrey; and three great-grandchildren, Haley M. Hubbard, Joshua C. Hubbard, and Sydney M. Hubbard.
Lewis was born February 11, 1926 in Stedman, North Carolina on the family farm the son of Willie James and Carrie Williams Hubbard, the seventh of twelve children. After his graduation from Stedman High School in 1942, Lewis married the former Emma Cleveland Brown, and the couple embarked on a lifetime partnership of entrepreneurship and service. After brief stints farming and working with the Veterans Administration, Lewis moved to Winston-Salem in 1946 and founded Hubbard Real Estate Company. He worked part-time at the Zinzendorf Hotel for the use of a desk and a telephone. The real estate industry became Lewis’s second great love, and he engaged himself in every aspect. Over the following fifty-eight years, Lewis sought associates and partners who possessed integrity, ambition, and ability. He established firms engaged in real estate brokerage, residential and commercial land development, insurance, construction, construction-lending, property management and building supplies throughout the area.
Lewis’s personal, civic and professional commitments have included service on the boards of trustees of Fairview Moravian Church and Salemtowne Retirement Community and the Moravian Theological Seminary in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; as a director of the city boards of North Carolina National Bank and Lexington State Bank, the Better Business Bureau, the Consumer Credit Counseling Service, the North Carolina Association of Realtors, the Salvation Army, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
Lewis was a past president of the Winston-Salem Board of Realtors and the Multiple Listing Service. He was honored as the Realtor of the Year, an inaugural member of the Thomas A. Lambe Hall of Fame, recipient of the A.R. Tuttle Memorial Award, and of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Winston-Salem Homebuilders Association. He also served on the Board of Presidential Advisors of Campbell University, which honored him on May 13, 1996 as the recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. Lewis’s dear friend and President of the University, Dr. Norman Wiggins, presented the honor with these words: “Algernon Sydney Sullivan was described by a friend as one who reached out both hands in constant helpfulness to men. It is therefore fitting and with great pride that Campbell University bestows the 1996 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award upon a man who exemplifies the same high ideals, Lewis E. Hubbard.”
Well done, my son; come home now to the Lord.
