Obituaries for April 2, 2009

- Dorothy “Dot” Taylor
Dorothy “Dot” Taylor, 85, passed away at Salemtowne on Wednesday, March 25, 2009. She was born on May 20, 1923, in Forsyth County to A.W. “Dock” and Jennie Cornish Davis. Mrs. Taylor graduated from Clemmons High School. Mrs. Taylor was a very active member of her church, Centenary United Methodist, where she sang in the church choir. She was also a very active member in the Senior Citizens Group at the VFW. Mrs. Taylor once sang the national anthem at a Warthogs game at the age of 80. She and her husband sang at the Navy Chapel Choir in Washington, D.C., which is where they met. They wrote many songs together, published an album called “Our Beloved Land, and performed for many different groups. Mrs. Taylor was also an avid bird watcher. She played piano and loved her cats and dogs. Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bob Taylor; four brothers, Allen Davis, Charlie Davis, Woodrow Davis and Kenneth Davis who was killed in World War II; and three sisters, Fannie Davis, Lily Tesh and Jewell Davis. She is survived by a son, Chris Lynn; a grandson, Terry Lynn; three great grandchildren, Cody, Drew, and Taylor; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat, “Sam”. A Funeral Service for Mrs. Taylor was held on Saturday, March 28, at Centenary United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at The Elms at Tanglewood for the care they showed Mrs. Taylor during her stay there. The family requests that memorial contributions be made in Mrs. Taylor’ s name to Centenary United Methodist Church, 5280 Hampton Road, Clemmons, NC 27012.

Ralph Lewis Hernsmith
Ralph Lewis Hernsmith, born June 20, 1924, succumbed to cancer on Wednesday, March 25, 2009. A decorated Veteran of World War II, he stormed the beaches of Normandy and served with the 90th Infantry throughout the European Theater. Entirely devoted to his wife of 60 loving years, Edna Atwood Hernsmith, he is survived by his wife, Edna; his children, Rebecca Hernsmith Lee (Rick), Patricia Hernsmith Joyce (Mike), and Nancye Hernsmith Bright (Jeff); his grandchildren, Wendy Joyce Terry (Carlton), Jenny Lynn Joyce, Mindy Leanne Joyce (Jarrod), Adam L. Coleman and Lauren L. Coleman; and his great-grandchildren, Charles Terry, Eden Joyce and Erika Terry. His wisdom, his experiences, his love, his wit, his stories and his love have touched the lives of all whom he met. He lived his life fully, well and with honor and distinction. He is the champion of his family’ s hearts. We continue to celebrate his life and mourn his passing. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Hospice of Winston-Salem.

Ellis Ray Black
Mr. Ellis Ray Black, 59, of Lewisville, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at his home. He was born September 18, 1949 in Forsyth County to Daniel Lee Black and Gladys Brown Black. Mr. Black was a long-time employee of Carolina Narrow Fabric. He was preceded in death by his parents ; and a brother, Perry Black. Surviving him are two brothers, Daniel Black and wife, Judy of East Bend and Charles Cherry and wife, Gay of King; and several nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 28, 2009 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Bishop F.D. Vaught officiating. Burial will follow at Concord United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 27, 2009 at the funeral home.

Richard DeWitt
“Dick” Ogburn
Richard DeWitt “Dick” Ogburn, 77, died peacefully at home Wednesday, March 25, 2009. He was born March 12, 1932 in Forsyth County to the late Robert Masten Ogburn and Lucille Thornton Ogburn. After graduating from R.J. Reynolds in 1951, Dick went on to serve his country in the United States Army. Upon returning to Winston-Salem, he continued his education graduating from Wake Forest University. Dick however found his true passion playing golf, acquired his professional license and worked as a club pro until his retirement in 1992 from Tanglewood Park. Dick’ s life was a living testament to finding peace and contentment in the simple things. He cherished his wife, dogs, family and friends. Dick was a lifelong lover of the outdoors and his favorite pastimes were golfing, hunting and trout fishing amidst the natural world he so loved. A wonderful husband, father, grandfather and one of the truest friends a person could have, Dick will be missed by all who loved him. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 44 years, Katherine “Kitty” Kinnard Kerr Ogburn; his brother, Robert Masten Ogburn, Jr.; his two sisters, Ella Ogburn Rees Wilkinson and Lucille Thornton Ogburn Simmerman; and his niece, Jennie Lou Simmerman Skaff. He is survived by his daughter, Virginia Ann “Ginny” Ogburn Genung and husband, David Genung and their children, Justin Ross Vernon, Jessica Sarah Vernon, and Daniel Lee Genung of Clemmons. NC; and his two sons; Richard DeWitt “Bo” Ogburn, Jr. and wife, Angie Bower Ogburn and their children, Kylie Margaret Ogburn, Colin Robert Ogburn and Katherine Carol “KC” Ogburn, and Robert Ross “Bob” Ogburn and wife, Mindy Stokes Ogburn and their son, Ross Masten Ogburn, all of Winston-Salem, NC. Additional survivors include Richard Joseph “Dick” Skaff, husband of his late niece, Jennie Lou Simmerman Skaff and their children, Elizabeth Skaff Hammond and husband, Jim, and son, William James Hammond of Charlotte, NC; Robert Simmerman Skaff of Miami, FL; Richard Joseph Skaff, Jr. and wife, Jenna and their son, Richard Skaff III of Mooresville, NC; his nieces, Susan Ball “SuSu” Rees of Harker’ s Island, NC; Elizabeth “Libbo” Ogburn Simmerman, her son, John Curtis Darby and his daughter, Aleesiya Darby of Bluefield, WV; his nephews, Frank Edward Simmerman, Jr., his wife, Jane and their children, Frank E. “Trey’ Simmerman III and Rebecca Wythe Simmerman, all of Clarksburg, WV; Robert Bauder “Bobby” Rees and his wife, Robbins Rees and his daughter, Danielle of Washington, NC. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, March 28, at Salem Funeral Home, South Main Street, Winston-Salem NC, 27101. His Funeral Service was held Sunday, March 29, at New Philadelphia Moravian Church, with the Rev. Worth Greene officiating. Burial followed in the Church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to be made to Forsyth Humane Society, Dept WBOO, P.O. Box 15605, Winston-Salem, NC 27113 and Hospice & Palliative Care Center, Attn: Finance Department, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to thank all of his doctors, nurses, CNA’ s and staff who were there for him during his illness and the love and care he received from Hospice.

Geraldine C. Greis
Geraldine C. Greis, 79, passed away at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on Sunday, March 29, 2009. She was born on April 27, 1929, in Halifax, VA, to the late Arthur Franklin, Sr. and Maggie Holt Canada. Mrs. Greis enjoyed arranging flowers and even shipped and sold some of her arrangements. She was the owner and operator of Stitch and Such in Clemmons and Traditions Gift Shop. Mrs. Greis was also a member of the Women’ s Auxiliary Club in Clemmons and she attended Clemmons Moravian Church. Mrs. Greis is survived by her husband, Joseph; two sons, Wayne (Penny) Tilley and Anthony Ken Kraus; five grandchildren, Tracy, Bridgette, Shoun, Caroline and Nicholas; five great grandchildren, Wooten, Weslyn, Ellie, Maisy and Caleb; a brother, Arthur Franklin Canada, Jr.; two sisters, Lucille Chandler and Mable Compton; a stepson, Joseph Andrew Greis; another grandchild, Max Greis; and a sister-in-law, Mary Greis. A Funeral Service for Mrs. Greis will be held at 3:00 p.m., on Thursday, April 2, at Clemmons Moravian Church. Interment will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1, at the Frank Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for the care they provided to Mrs. Greis during her stay there. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Esme J. “Jimmie” Burrer
Mrs. Esme J. “Jimmie” Burrer, 62, of Clemmons, died Sunday, March 29, 2009, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC. She was born on October 23, 1926, Wood County, OH, to the late Arthur F. and Meta C. Henry. Jimmie graduated from Monroeville, OH High School in 1944, attended Ohio State University, and graduated from Bliss College in Columbus, OH. She is survived by her husband of over 62 years, LTC John D. “Jack” Burrer; two daughters, Benita J. Potter of Stuart, FL and Jennifer L. Librandi of Clemmons, NC; a brother, Dr. Frederic C. Henry of Stuart, FL; seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, John D. Burrer, Jr.; and a sister, Jacqueline Henry-Roscoe. She was a career Army wife, deeply loved and devoted to her family, loved to travel, having lived and traveled throughout the U.S., Japan, and Europe. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Donations in her memory may be made to the Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103

Bob “Fonzy” Hendrix
A memorial service for Bob “Fonzy” Hendrix will be held Saturday, April 11, at Clemmons United Methodist Church at 12 noon. Hendrix died Nov. 14, 2007 and is survived by Nancy Hendrix; daughter, Rene Hendrix of Greensboro; and son, Carl Hendrix of Clemmons.
He was a Clemmons native, born to the late Carl and Ora Mae Hendrix. He was born June 1, 1935 and built many houses in the Clemmons area. He was born June 1, 1935 and graduated from Clemmons High School. He then went to Lees-McRae College and N.C. State University. He worked for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. until he opened his own businesses, Town & Country Builders and Hendrix Building and Realty Inc.
He enjoyed N.C. State athletics and volunteered with the Winston-Salem Jaycees, the Crosby golf tournaments and the Clemmons Civic Club. He was a member of Clemmons United Methodist Church.
Hendrix was a building contractor and faithful Courier football and basketball contest participant until he was striken by Alzheimer’s disease.
