Obituaries for May 29, 2008

- Kenneth Sparks Beckner
Kenneth Sparks Beckner, 63, died from head trauma on Monday May 19, 2008, at Carolinas Medical Center. He was born in Winston-Salem on April 24, 1945. Ken was the son of the late Melvin Sides Beckner and Virginia Sparks Beckner. He was a graduate of Southwest High School class of 1964 and served during the Vietnam Conflict in the Air Force. Ken retired as a ground school instructor for US Airways in 2000 where he worked for both Piedmont Airlines and US Airways for a total 32 years. For the last several years, Ken was the owner and president of Amelia Renovations Inc. and was N.C. licensed general contractor. Ken was a member of St. John’ s Baptist Church and a member of the Farside Sunday school class. He also served on the House and Grounds Committee on behalf of the church. A memorial service was held Friday, May 23, at St. John’ s Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by nephew Brian Beckner. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Lynn Kerley Beckner; a daughter, Meghan of the home; a son, Todd, and his wife, Paige, of Winston-Salem; three brothers, Gray, L.J. and Henry Beckner of Winston-Salem; a sister, Diann Sweet, also of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Tyler and Sydney Beckner; three nieces, Donna Boyles, Angie Richards and Nikki Covington; and three nephews, Chris Sweet, Keith Beckner and Butch Beckner. Memorials may be made to St. John’ s Baptist Church, 300 Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte, NC 28204.

Graham Erlacher
Graham Erlacher, 83, of Clemmons passed away Monday evening, May 19, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Aug. 14, 1924, in Milford, Conn., to Margaret and Paul Erlacher. Graham was an outstanding athlete in high school and college, playing football, baseball and basketball. At 17, he enlisted to serve his country in the U.S. Navy on a destroyer escort during World War II in both the Atlantic and Pacific. After the war, Graham attended Elon College, graduating in 1950. He served the U.S. Federal Court as a court reporter for 30 years. He started Graham Erlacher and Associates, a deposition and court reporting service. Graham enjoyed horseback riding and working outdoors. He was an active member of St. Timothy’ s Episcopal Church from its earliest days. He was a loving and loyal husband, father and grandfather. Graham is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mildred Johnson Erlacher; his daughter, Kim, and her husband, Graham Johnston, of Winston-Salem; his son, Gray Erlacher, and his wife, Karen, of Dillingham, Alaska; a brother, Paul Erlacher Jr., and wife Lesley of Milford; plus several nieces and nephews. He had five grandchildren, Alex and Auburn Johnston, Nicholas Johnston, Marianne Johnston, Trevor and Megan Erlacher and Claine Erlacher. A memorial service was held Saturday, May 24, at St. Timothy’ s Episcopal Church at 2575 Parkway Drive, Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to St. Timothy’ s or to a charitable organization of the donor’ s choice.

Michael Dwight Harris
Mr. Michael Dwight Harris, 61, of Clemmons passed away Sunday, May 18, 2008, at his home. He was born in Guilford County on May 14, 1947, to Dwight and Aritha Jones Harris. Mr. Harris served in the U.S. Air Force and later worked as an insurance adjuster. He is survived by his wife, Christina M. Harris; five sons, William, Arthur, Andrew, Samuel and James; and a grandson, Tyler. A graveside service was conducted May 22, at Parklawn Memorial Park, with E. Wayne Worrell and the VFW Honor Guard officiating.

Garland Lee Sullivan
Garland Lee Sullivan, born Dec. 27, 1935, to Zella Lambeth Sullivan and Robert Garland Sullivan, passed away Friday, May 23, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center. He retired from French’ s Heating and Air Co. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ruth of the home; daughter Rebecca Pope (Tim) of Winston-Salem; sons Chris Sullivan (Vickie) of Clemmons; Steve Sullivan (Annette) of Lewisville; and Robert Sullivan of Lewisville; granddaughters Amy Shore (J.R.) of Boonville; Brittany Sullivan of Winston-Salem; and Brooke Sullivan of Lewisville; grandsons Bryan Pope (Angela) of Columbus, Ind.; Andy Sullivan of Lewisville; and Adam Sullivan of Lewisville; two great-grandchildren, Jordan and Juleigh Shore of Boonville; brother Gerald Sullivan (Phyllis); and sister, Peggy Tyler (Claimon), both of Winston-Salem; a niece; and five nephews. A memorial service was held Sunday, May 25, at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to a charity of the donor’ s choice. The family wishes to express thanks to the Lewisville Fire Department and the staff at Lewisville Family Practice.

Aldine Grey Hege Jr.
Mr. Aldine Grey Hege Jr., 60, died Saturday, May 24, 2008, at his residence. He was born Sept. 20, 1947, to Aldine Grey and Osie Wooten Hege. Mr. Hege enjoyed showing dogs and planting flowers. He loved art and wrote the school song for West High School. He moved to Delaware and in later years moved back to Winston-Salem to be near his family. He was preceded in death by his father; and his sister, Rebecca Leigh Hege Street. He is survived by his mother, Osie Wooten Jennings (Roy); a sister, Catherine Hege Ittermann (Bob); and brothers Richard Hege, Alan Hege, Tim Hege (Kathy), Roy Jennings Jr. (Teresa), David Jennings (Marilyn), Alan Jennings (Susan) and Richard Jennings. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles; and devoted caregiver Robin Moore. A graveside service was conducted Wednesday, May 28, at Beck’ s Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Zak King officiating. Memorials may be made to Friendship Baptist Church, 6120 Yadkinville Road, Pfafftown, NC 27040, or Beck’ s Baptist Church, 5505 Beck’ s Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
