- Willie Smith Eccles
Mr. Willie Smith Eccles, 79, of 1423 Harrison Ave., Winston-Salem, passed away Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born June 24, 1928, in Clemmons, the son of Alexander and Eliza Wharton Eccles. Smith was a dedicated member of Carver School Road Church of Christ. He demonstrated this dedication by working with the church treasurer and leading songs. His favorite hymn was No. 398 - “Everybody Will Be Happy Over There.” He attended Carver High School where he also drove a school bus from Clemmons to Winston-Salem. He served as a military policeman in the Korean Conflict and worked at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 30 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers; and five sisters. He leaves to cherish his memories his devoted wife of 54 years, Mae Belle Eccles of the home; a son, Kevin (Kim) Eccles of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Renae Eccles and Katonya Eccles of Winston-Salem; four brothers, George E. (Viola) Eccles of Norfolk, Va.; Frank L. Eccles of Luxembourg; Dallas C. (Ruth) Eccles of Clemmons; and David L. (Francine) Eccles of Columbia, Md.; a sister, Bobed E. Murray of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Alex and Kelsi Eccles; a devoted niece, Mary Ann Robinson; two devoted friends, Rodney Nash and Chuck Jennings; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Feb. 21, at Carver School Road Church of Christ, with Brother Jefferson Caruthers officiating. Interment followed in Piedmont Memorial Gardens.

Irene Boger Conrad
Mrs. Irene Boger Conrad, 89, of Lewisville went home to be with the Lord on Monday morning, Feb. 18, 2008. She was born April 6, 1918, in Forsyth County to Louie and Gertrude Mae Boger. She was a lifetime member of Lewisville United Methodist Church. Mrs. Conrad excelled as a basketball player for Old Town School and played semi-pro basketball for Hanes Hosiery. She enjoyed working in her yard and cooking for her family and friends. She was a good neighbor to everyone. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mrs. Conrad retired from Western Electric after 30 years of service. She was a devoted partner in assisting her husband with their farming chores. She was an active member of the Who Club at Lewisville United Methodist Church. Mrs. Conrad was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Esta Conrad; her parents; and four brothers, Harold Boger, Herbert Boger, Howard Boger and Lester Boger. She is survived by her son, Victor Esta Conrad of Lewisville; a grandson, Victor Shannon (Dana) Conrad of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Mrs. Robin (Eddie) Day of Durham and Mrs. Dee Dee (Monty) Forrest of Boonville; three great-granddaughters, Kendra (Tony) Widner of East Bend; Casey Forrest of Boonville; and Savannah Childress of Winston-Salem; four great-grandsons, Seth Forrest of Yadkinville; Seth Childress of Winston-Salem; Adam Conrad of Winston-Salem; and Thomas Conrad of Winston-Salem; and four great-great-grandsons, Jake, Max, Dru Widner and Cayman Forrest-Pruitt. The funeral service was conducted Feb. 21, at Lewisville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Keith Bingham conducting. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Lewisville United Methodist Church, 703 Shallowford Road, Lewisville, NC 27023.

Barbara Ann Matthews
Ms. Barbara Ann Matthews, 69, of 801 Woodview Ridge Trail, Lewisville, passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. “Nana” was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her. She was born May 26, 1938, in Surry County to the late Leonard and Ada Seals Matthews. She was retired from AT&T, was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker. Surviving are two daughters, Cathy Canzonza and Nancy Frye both of Lewisville; a grandson and fiancee, Joshua Canzona of Boston, Mass., and Molly Rose Makover of Winston-Salem; a sister, Wanda Hall of Pilot Mountain, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby and Mary Ruth Matthews of Mount Airy and Bill and Alicia Matthews of San Francisco, Calif. A memorial service was conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy, with Mr. Joshua Canzona and the Rev. Ann Tuttle officiating. Flowers will be accepted, and memorials may be made to the Dr. Cathy Canzona and Dr. Lenora Campbell Nursing Discretionary Fund, 601 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27110. Alice Thompson Umhau
Mrs. Alice Thompson Umhau of Sweetwater Court, Clemmons, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, at her home. Mrs. Umhau was born Dec. 12, 1921, in Surry County to Benjamin and Emma Cockerham Thompson. Mrs. Umhau graduated from Mountain Park High School in 1938 and attended Richmond Business College and Strayer University of Maryland; School of Secretaries and Pan American Business College in Washington, D.C. She was a lifetime member of Eastern Star Chapter 48 for 50 years and was a member of the Ritual of the Ladies Oriental Shrine in Washington where she traveled worldwide with the Shriners. She retired from the U.S. Patent office in Washington, D.C., as an executive director for the Board of Appeals in 1975. Mrs. Umhau was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem and was a former member of First Baptist Church of Washington, D.C., and St. Paul Episcopal Church in Maryland. She was an avid reader of the Bible, reading the Old Testament once each year and the New Testament twice each year. Alice was a resident of Heritage Woods Retirement Center in Winston-Salem from 1995-2007 where she was on the greeting committee and volunteered at the gift shop. She loved spending time at her vacation home in Chesapeake Beach, Md., and loved her companion, her poodle, “Rumsey.” She married Walter C. Umhau in 1941, and he preceded her in death. In addition to her parents; and husband; she was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Ralph Thompson, Ruth Wingfield, Ray Thompson, Tommy Thompson, Mary Thompson Spainhour and Hort Thompson. Survivors include nieces Betty Spainhour of the home, Doris Wagoner and husband Harold of Hamptonville, Peggy Wingfield, Linda Wingfield and Joyce Fairlamb of Virginia, Debbie Doerr and Paige Thompson both of New York, and Brenda Thompson of Asheville; nephews David Wingfield and wife Carol of Apex, Joe Spainhour and wife Myra of Harrisburg, Bill Spainhour and wife Kay of Pensacola, Fla., Ralph Spainhour of Virginia, Johnny Thompson and wife Elaine of Robbinsville, Doughton Thompson and wife Pat, Freddie Lee Thompson and Charles Thompson, all of Elkin; Chris Thompson and wife Brenda of Jonesville; a sister-in-law, Melba Thompson Bari of Pennsylvania; Naomi Thompson of Jonesville; and many loving great-nieces and great-nephews and their families. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Feb. 24, at Mountain Park Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ken Bradstone officiating. Burial followed at Mountain Park Cemetery with Masonic Rites. Raymond Lester Sarbaugh Jr.
Raymond Lester Sarbaugh Jr., 80, passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born June 21, 1927, to Raymond Lester Sarbaugh and Alice Barnes Sarbaugh in Fayetteville. Mr. Sarbaugh held A.B., M.Ed. and Ed.D. degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill. He devoted his professional life to public education and to the youth of Forsyth County. He began his career in 1949 with the Forsyth County schools, serving as a teacher and coach at Lewisville School and Northwest High School. In 1956, he became the first director of guidance for the Forsyth County schools. Subsequently he served as assistant superintendent of schools of Forsyth County, and with the advent of city/county consolidation, became associate superintendent for instruction and later assistant superintendent for secondary education. Mr. Sarbaugh played a central role in helping local schools meet the challenges of consolidation and desegregation. After his retirement from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools, he served as executive director of the N.C. Association of School Administrators until his retirement in 1989. Mr. Sarbaugh’ s passion was rooting for his beloved Carolina Tarheels basketball team. He enjoyed golf and tennis and continued to work on a volunteer basis as treasurer of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Retired School Personnel. He was preceded in death by his youngest daughter, Carol Sarbaugh. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sue Carter Sarbaugh; daughters Martha Veto and her husband, Robert, of Florence, S.C., and Janet Sarbaugh and her husband, William McAllister, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; his sister, Rachel Sarbaugh, and her life partner, Shirley Underwood of Manassas, Va.; and two grandchildren, Rachel Veto and Charles Veto. A memorial service will be held Feb. 24, at Home Moravian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Home Moravian Church, 529 S. Church St., Winston-Salem, NC, 27101. John Edgar Mayes Sr
John Edgar Mayes Sr., 80, of Clemmons died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, at the Crest of Clemmons. Mr. Mayes was born Sept. 16, 1927, in Forsyth County, a son of the late Lonnie Mayes and the late Beatrice Wooten Mayes. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a retired service manager with Action Parts and Service. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Carlene Freeman Mayes; six children; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister; and a brother. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with the Rev. James Gray and the Rev Otis Hurst officiating. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 26, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Heaven Bound Baptist Church, Lexington. The family would like to thank the staff at the Crest of Clemmons for their care and support.
