Mr. Michael Wayne Stone, 50, of Lewisville died Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, at Springwood Care Center. He was born Aug. 16, 1957, in Winston-Salem, the son of the late Myrtle Stone. He is survived by his companion of 14 years, Debbie Stewart of the home; his loving sister, Debbie Bargoil, and husband Paul of Clemmons; and his brother, Roger Stone, and family of Winston-Salem. Nick Pete Davis Nick Pete Davis fell asleep in the Lord Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008. The beloved son of Pete and Angeline Davis, he was born Oct. 3, 1931, in Raleigh, where he lived until moving to Clemmons in 2002 for health reasons. Nick was a graduate of Hugh Morson High School in Raleigh; attended Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Seminary in Brookline, Mass.; and was a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill where he received a B.S. in accounting and was a member of Delta Sigma Pi and Kappa Sigma Epsilon Fraternities. Known fondly to many as “Mr. Etna,” he retired as regional claims supervisor with Aetna Life and Casualty in 1993 after 35 years and was active in claims associations local and statewide. He then entered N.C. Government for five years. Nick served in the Armed Forces for three years during the Korean War and retired from the N.C. National Guard where he served as first sergeant with the 440th Army Band. Nick will be remembered as a loving family man and a Christian who served God’ s church many years as choir director, choir member, orchestra member, youth adviser, Sunday school teacher, Bible study teacher, Stephen’ s Minister, Church Board and Building Fund member, and many other ministries including serving on the Raleigh Rescue Mission Board and as an interpreter with Special Olympics. His love of music and playing the trombone touched many hearts, and in addition to the National Guard Band, for many years he was a member of Leon Jordan’ s Continentals, Charlie Chiklis’ Moonlighters, Raleigh Community Band, and in later years entertained members of Alzheimer’ s Respite Care Centers. The legacy he leaves to his children and grandsons is Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, work at it with your whole heart, as working for the Lord, not men.” Nick was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers George, Gus, Charles “Chris,” Leonidas “Louie,” William “Bill” and sisters Mary Vurnakas and Millie Prokopis. Nick was the devoted husband of Hazeline Poole Davis; loving father to Pete N. Davis and wife Debbie of Raleigh; daughter Michelle Reingold and husband William of Clemmons; and the doting “Papou” of Zack, Luke and Drew Davis and Will and Niko Reingold. He is also survived by three loving sisters, Olga Christos of Raleigh; Jennie Johns of Richmond, Va.; and Ann Sophocleus of Baltimore, Md.; and many more nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held at Nick’ s home church, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 5000 Lead Mine Road, Raleigh, Monday, Jan. 21, 2008. Burial followed at Raleigh Memorial Park. May his memory be eternal. Doris Ennis Stimpson Smith Doris Ennis Stimpson Smith, 90, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at Fitzgerald Health Care Center of Arbor Acres. She was born March 8, 1917, in Forsyth County to Harvey Baxter Stimpson Sr. and Virgie Thompson Stimpson. She was a graduate of Clemmons High School and a member of Knollwood Baptist Church. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Ozzie Stimpson, Harvey Stimpson Jr. and Sanford “Sam” Stimpson; and her husband, Reid Burton Smith Sr., who died in 1987. Surviving are two sons, Reid Burton “Burt” Smith Jr. of Greensboro and David Stimpson Smith of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Carlos Burton Smith; and a sister, Nancye Stimpson Blythe of Alberta, Canada. A memorial service was held Jan. 20, at Knollwood Baptist Church Chapel, with the Rev. Mary Anne Ramsey officiating. Richard Allen Williard Mr. Richard Allen Williard, 67, of Winston-Salem passed away Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at the Brian Center. He was born March 14, 1940, to Dewey Aaron and Fannie Everidge Williard. Mr. Williard was a member of Fraternity Church of the Brethren where he served as treasurer since 1982. He was also a Past Master of Salem Masonic Lodge No. 289, Scottish Rites Body and Past Patron of Twin City Chapter No. 60 O.E.S. Mr. Williard retired from the Winston-Salem Fire Department after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Country Corvette Club and Winston-Salem Corvette Club. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Frances Minish and Claudia Craddock; and a brother, Jessie Williard. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Tesh Williard; a daughter, Sharon Beam, and her husband, Randy, of Concord; a son, Richard Michael Williard, and his wife, Melissa, of Wake Forest; three sisters, Elizabeth Davis of Winston-Salem; Elsie Eicher and her husband, Bill, of Harrisonburg, Va.; and Mary Williard of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Robert Williard, and his wife, Ann, of Winston-Salem. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Jonathan Beam, Shawn Beam, Kellie Beam, Ben Williard and Jared Williard; and a brother-in-law, Leon Craddock of Winston-Salem. A funeral service was conducted Saturday, Jan. 19, at Fraternity Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Dave Kindy and the Rev. Robert Williard officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery. Wilbur Eugene “Gene” Young Wilbur Eugene “Gene” Young, 68, of Sunny Acres Drive, Lewisville, passed away Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at his home. Eugene was born Nov. 6, 1939, in Stokes County. He grew up attending Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Sandy Ridge and was a member of Fairview Moravian Church. He worked with the Winston Salem Fire Department as an engineer. He was a fire fighter and pumper instructor for Forsyth Technical Community College. He enjoyed coaching and umpiring Little League games and also umpired baseball games for junior high and high schools for many years. He was also instrumental in building Joanie Moser Memorial Park, which was Lewisville’ s first girls’ softball field. He was a loving husband and a wonderful Dad to his sons in many ways. He enjoyed doing carpenter work, working on his farm and helping friends in need. He was preceded in death by his father, Wilson Young of Raleigh; his mother, Euna Handy Young of Lawsonville; and a half brother, Dennis Young of Wake Forest. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Deanna Gilley Young of the home; two sons, Gregory Gene (Connie) Young of Pleasant Garden and Jason Trent Young of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Austin and Allison Young of Pleasant Garden; a half brother, Darell (Phyllis) Young of Georgia; and a half sister, Donna (Jackie) Thompson of Wake Forest. The funeral service was conducted Saturday, Jan. 19, at Oak Ridge Baptist Church, with the Rev. Melvin Shelton officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Deborah Sue Hendrix Bohannon ORLANDO, Fla. - Mrs. Deborah Sue Hendrix Bohannon, 55, of Orlando, and previously of Winston-Salem, N.C., passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, at Health Central in Florida. Mrs. Bohannon was born in Forsyth County, N.C., to Clarence “Sleepy” and Margaret “Peggy” Hendrix on Nov. 21, 1952. Mrs. Bohannon was preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her husband, John Wayne Bohannon of Orlando; her mother of Clemmons; two sisters, Diane Reich of Clemmons and Dana Cook (Mike) of Advance; a brother, Dennis “Butch” Hendrix (Carol) of Roanoke, Va.; seven children; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A funeral service was conducted Friday, Jan. 18, at Yadkin Valley Baptist Church, with Pastor Ronnie Craddock officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Gerald Fletcher Walser Gerald Fletcher Walser, 77, of Friedburg Church Road, Clemmons, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Walser was born Nov. 16, 1930, in Lexington to the late Irvin and Eva Owens Walser. He was a graduate of Dunbar High School in Lexington. Gerald served in the U.S. Army and was a retired employee of PPG of 21 years. He loved to play golf. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of New Jersey AME Zion Church. He is survived by a devoted wife, Ethel C. Walser of the home; five sons, Gerald “Eddie” Byers and Ricky Byers, both of Cleveland, Ohio; Ray (Gladys) Walser of Lexington; and Sherman (Devora) Transou and Keith (Linda) Transou, both of Winston-Salem; three daughters, Martha Hairston of Ohio; Patricia Byers of Lexington; and Sherri (James) Mitchell of Clemmons; 23 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two brothers, the Rev. Horace C. (Kay) Walser of Winston-Salem and Donald (Barbara) Walser of Lexington; a sister, Jan Walser Lindsay of Lexington; a sister-in-law, Yvonne (Charlie) Imes of Winston-Salem; a brother-in-law James Cuthrell of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at New Jersey AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Allen Stimpson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Public viewing was from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, and from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 12. |
