Obituaries for Jan. 8, 2009

- John Bahnson Dorse
John Bahnson Dorse, 87, of Lewisville passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born January 23, 1921 in Forsyth County, the son of the late William Henry Dorse and Susie Tuttle Dorse. Mr. Dorse was a World War II veteran and a retired country ham salesman, farmer and owner of J. B. Dorse Landscaping Company. After his retirement in 1984, he continued his love of farming and gardening. He was a faithful member of Warner’ s Chapel Church of Christ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Danny Ray Dorse, two brothers, Terry Dorse and Worth Dorse and three sisters, Sue Katherene Dorse, Cecil Ketner and Elizabeth Barkley. Survivors include his wife, Nellie Kathryn Dorse; two daughters, Gaye Ruark and husband, Gene of Clemmons and Sandy Lewis of the home; two grandchildren, Jimmy Ruark and wife, Amanda of Belews Creek and Gina Strickland and husband, Buddy of Lewisville; four great-grandchildren, Ashlyn and Avery Strickland, Reid and Reanna Ruark and one sister-in-law, Iva Dorse of Mocksville and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 7, 2008, at Warner’ s Chapel Church of Christ with Minister Frank W. Shepard officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may made to the North Carolina School of Biblical Studies, 8999 Lasater, Rd., Clemmons, NC 27012.

Basil Kenneth Price
Hockessin, DL — Basil Kenneth Price, 70, of Hockessin, Delaware, the son of the late Kenneth Withrow and the late Mary Sue Horn Price of Forest City, North Carolina passed away on December 28, 2008 after an extended illness. He was a native of Rutherford County, N.C., born in Alexander Mills on November 1, 1938. He is a 1957 graduate of the former Cool Springs High School, Forest City. He entered the United States Naval Reserve for a six-year enlistment where he served on the admiral’s staff of the USS Intrepid (CVA-11) and the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42). Upon receiving an honorable discharge from the service, he enrolled and graduated from Pfeiffer University in Meisenheimer, North Carolina where he received the Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.
Following college, he taught high school biology and chemistry in Atlanta, Georgia and Salisbury, N.C. He then worked for the Atlantic-Richfield Oil Company in Charlotte, N.C. and Virginia Beach, Virginia. Later, he began selling life insurance for the Aetna Life and Casualty Insurance Company in Washington, D.C., became a general agent in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was a senior vice president in Hartford, Connecticut. He retired from the Aetna and became a senior vice president for the Lincoln Financial Group in Hartford, CT. After retirement from Lincoln, he moved to Delaware and became a substitute teacher in order to give back to society.
He was a member of Berwyn United Methodist Church in Berwyn, Pennsylvania.
He was a member of the Upper Main Line YMCA when he lived in Berwyn and was the video photographer of swim meets for the swim team there. He was a Certified Life Underwriter and a member of the Million Dollar Round Table.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Lynn Harper Price of Hockessin, Delaware; three children and their spouses: Ian and Mary Price Brooks of Towson, Maryland; Steve and Lisa Price Green of Arlington, Virginia; and Mike and Kelly Price of Allentown, Pennsylvania.
He is also survived by one sister, Elizabeth Cozette Price Jacobs of New Smyrna Beach, FL and one brother, Cecil Ray Price, of Dallas, TX. He is survived by seven grandchildren: Jonathan Brooks, Grace Brooks, Timothy Brooks and Jackson Brooks of Towson, Maryland; Andrew Green and Eleanor Green of Arlington, Virginia; and Katryna Price of Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Funeral services were conducted on Saturday January 3, in Forest City, North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be sent to the Dr. Charles Hesdorffer Research Fund, A-Building, 4940 Eastern Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21224.

Russel B. Boeldt
Russel B. Boeldt, born Haven WI, September 6, 1923 to Herbert 0. and Elenora (Grunewald) Boeldt, and left this earth Wednesday December 31st with family at his side succumbing to Alzheimer’s and natural aging causes.
He served his country in WWII as a Staff Sergeant in the 5th Army Engineering. He was joined in marriage May 7, 1947 to Dorothy Prinsen of Sheboygan Falls at the First Reformed Church in Sheboygan Falls.
He then worked as a mechanic for various auto repair shops, and went on to be employed as a supervisor for J S Richardson for nearly 25 years. Following which, he and Dorothy moved to Clemmons and he was then employed by Gravely/Ariens Corporation as a plant supervisor. He retired from that position and he and Dorothy moved back to Sheboygan.
Russel was a member of Bethany Reformed Church of Sheboygan. His past interests included snowmobiling, auto, and any type of engine repairs….he could make any motor purr.
Survivors included his wife Dorothy, daughter & son-in-law Faye and Gary Gerhartz, grandsons Gavin (Kathy) Gerhartz of Sheboygan, Gregory Gerhartz of Chicago, IL, great grandsons Nathan & Nicholas Gerhartz. His brothers Howard (LaVerne), Henry (LaVerta), and Herbert Jr (Betty) Boeldt, sisters Lucille Zimmermann and Shirley Rudebeck, and many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Gordon & his wife Ruth Ann, sister Eldora and her husband Ira De Smidt, his brother-in-law Herbert Zimmermann, and also by an infant sister, Helen.
Funeral service were held Saturday at the funeral home with Russel’s nephew the Rev. DuWayne Hanke, RCA officiating. Burial followed in the Sheboygan Falls Cemetery. Memorials will be given to Alzheimer’s and American Heart Fund in Russel’s name.

Ruby Elaine Greer
In early afternoon of January 2, 2009, Ruby Elaine Greer entered into Eternal Rest. She was born January 16, 1916 in Bloomfield, Nebraska to Addie Belle Huff and Thomas Milton Greer. The family moved to Boone, NC in the 1920’ s, where her father’ s family lived. Elaine attended school first in Nebraska and later in Boone. She was a graduate of Appalachian Teachers College in 1937. For several years she taught elementary school in North Carolina. She taught in Forsyth County at Mineral Springs School during World War II while living with her brother and his family. Following the end of the war, she moved to Baltimore, MD and lived with her older sister and her husband. She taught in Baltimore until retiring in 1976, then moved back to North Carolina and lived on Lake Norman. In 1982 following the death of her sister and brother-in-law, she moved once again back to Winston-Salem, living near her brother and sister-in-law. She was a member of Trinity Moravian Church during the war years of the 1940’ s. She moved her membership to Konnoak Hills Moravian in the early 1950’ s. She was preceded in death by her parents; a baby sister; her brother, Donald Greer and his wife, Josephine Greer; her sister, Virginia Greer Miller and her husband, Ben Miller, her benevolent aunt, Lena Huff and her dear nephew by marriage, Don Cardwell. Survivors include her niece, Sylvia Cardwell of Clemmons, her great niece, Sari Cardwell Glass and husband, Larry of Highlands Ranch, CO; great nephews, Gary Cardwell and wife, Linda of Lewisville; great-nephew, Brent Cardwell and wife, Susie of Lexington, great-great-niece, Jennifer G. Stahlman and her husband, Jonathan of San Leandro, CA, great-great-niece, Emily Glass of Highlands Ranch, CO, great-great niece, Kayla Jo Cardwell of Lexington, and great-great-nephew, Joey Cardwell of Lewisville; and great-great-nephew, Evan Cardwell of Lexington. Elaine lived a long full fiercely independent life. She loved to travel, especially cruises and traveling on bus trips with the Senior Friends Group of Konnoak Hills Moravian Church. She was a talented craftswoman and her great joy was watching sports on television. She was very proud of her nephew by marriage, Don Cardwell and his major league baseball career. In early 2000, Elaine moved to the Salemtowne Retirement Community where she lived in peaceful contentment. It was there where she passed away. A Graveside Service was conducted by the Rev. John D. Rights at Salem Moravian Graveyard on Monday, January 5, 2009. Edith Rae Riddle Harvey
Mrs. Edith Rae Riddle Harvey, age 84, of Collins Road, Elkin, widow of Furman Harvey, died Saturday, January 3, 2009 at Clemmons Nursing & Rehab in Clemmons. Funeral Services were held Monday, January 5, at Bethel Branch Church of Christ with Brother Steve Johnson, Brother Lawrence Warden and Pastor Gary Byrum officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Mrs. Harvey was born in Wilkes County, September 5, 1924, to Iredell Talmadge and Viola Jane Campbell Riddle. She was a member of Bethel Branch Church of Christ. Mrs. Harvey is survived by four sisters, Malinda Riddle of Lewisville, Mildred Johnson of Clemmons, Evelyn Effler of Yadkinville, Doris Brewer of North Wilkesboro; and one brother, Clate Riddle of Deltonia, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Wilkes, 1908 West Park Drive, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

Lillian Cowan Mock
Mrs. Lillian Cowan Mock, Arcadia, NC. Funeral service for Mrs. Lillian C. Mock, 74, of NC Hwy 150, were held Monday at Advance UMC in Advance, NC by the Rev. Terry Harris and burial at Piney Grove UMC in Advance. She passed away Friday, January 2, 2009 at Kate B. Reynolds in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Mock was born February 2, 1934 in Yadkin County to the late James and Thelma Hendricks Cowan. She retired from Moravian Sugar Cookie Factory and was a faithful member of Piney Grove United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Lee Mock; her parents; and three brothers, Charles H. Cowan, George Cowan, and William Cowan. She leaves to cherish her memory: four sons, James (Gwen) Campbell of Winston-Salem, Curtis Campbell of High Point, Henry M. (Yvetta) Campbell of Jonesville, and Ronald (Lisa) Campbell of Kernersville; four daughters, Crystal (Patrick) Powell of Reedy Creek, Yvette (Edward) Mitchell of Tampa FL, Dorothy Mae Hudspeth of Columbia, MO, and Andrian Hudson of Mocksville; 19 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Franklin (Christine) Cowan of Murfeesboro, TN; two sisters, Jewell Dulin (Calvin) Stringer of Advance, and Virginia (Walter) Johnson of Washington, DC; and a host of other family and friends. Morrison-Studevent is serving the Mock Family.

Dorothy Elizabeth Hedrick Barney
Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth Hedrick Barney, 90, died January 1, 2009 at the Elms at Tanglewood in Clemmons, North Carolina. She was born August 30, 1918 to the late Robah Gray Hedrick and Della McGee Hedrick. She was of the Baptist faith. She attended the Winston-Salem public schools and retired from Hanes Hosiery (Sara Lee) after 40 years of service. Her husband of 62 years, Thomas Junior Barney, preceded her in death in 2000. Mrs. Barney and her husband enjoyed RV’ ing and camping for as long as their health allowed and made many lifetime friends during their camping trips. She also enjoyed making crafts, continuing until her final months, winning a ribbon at the Dixie Classic Fair at age 90. Also preceding her were her two brothers, Everett R. Hedrick and R. Gray Hedrick, and two sisters, Georgia H. Pass Wolfe, and Helen H. Hedrick, and an infant great-grandson, Dillon Thomas Kuroda. Surviving is a son, Gary W. Barney (Doris) of Advance, two granddaughters, Amy B. Cates (Mike) of Greensboro and Jill B. Hutcheson (Jay) of Lewisville. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren who will miss their Granny, Joseph and Matthew Hutcheson and Jessica Spinale and a brother-in-law, W. J. “Bill” Wolfe of Winston-Salem and numerous special nieces and nephews. A funeral service was conducted Monday, January 5, 2009 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Michael Waters and the Rev. Clint Branch officiating. Burial followed at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family extends special thanks to the staff at the Elms at Tanglewood and to Hospice & Palliative Care Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Ln., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Lois McDaniel White
Lois McDaniel White of Winston-Salem, went to her heavenly home after a short but courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, December 31, 2008. She was born on August 31, 1934 in Kings Mountain to Forest and Baner Padgett McDaniel. She was a very active member of Abundant Grace Tabernacle. She was employed with Sara Lee for 14 years and retired from Winston-Salem Barber School and the Universal Insurance Company. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Larry Eugene White; two brothers, Thurmond and Lloyd McDaniel; and two sisters, Julie Lockridge and Bertha Rogers. Leaving to cherish her memory is Charles, her husband of 59 wonderful years; daughters, Marilyn Crockett and husband Louis of Clemmons, Linda Williams and husband Jim of Wallburg, and Charlene Jones and husband Daryl of Roanoke, VA; eight grandchildren, Teresa Ayers (Norman), Teena Martin, Chris Martin (Angie), Valarie Floyd (Brian), Justin White (Courtney), Jared Jones, Jessica Williams, and Anna Miller (Rodney); nine great grandchildren, Clay and Samantha Ayers, Ethan Wade, Kayla, Christina and Codi Martin, Hannah Floyd, Makayla and Caleb Miller; a sister, Inez Hutto; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 4 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Mike Jefferson officiating. A graveside service was held Monday, Jan. 5 in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. Memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Joe Henry Vance
Joe Henry Vance, 75, of Winston-Salem passed away December 29, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was the seventh of eight children born August 11, 1933 in Kernersville, the son of the late Marvin Dewitt and Hattie Mabe Vance. Joe graduated from Kernersville High School Class of 1952 as an outstanding athlete. The day after graduation he began 4 years of duty with the U S. Air force. After his service in the Air Force he attended and graduated from Gaston Tech. He retired from R. J. Reynolds Engineering Dept. with 31 years of service and contracted back for 15 more years as a consultant. Whether he was offering words of wisdom or brightening someone’ s day with his gift for telling jokes, Joe made a difference in the lives of those around him. While coaching for the Southwest little league baseball team, Joe displayed his leadership skills and love for sports. Joe loved his time teaching electrical engineering at Forsyth Technical Community College. While working at RJR, he was instrumental in the development of a computerized hearing test system. His fellow employees hearing was very important to him. He was a member of Hope Moravian Church. Joe loved life and it is this love that brought so much joy to so many people. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Coy, Clay, M. D. and Jack Vance and one sister, Sybil Vance Edwards. On April 6, 1953 he married Mary Johnson Vance who survives of the home. Also surviving are one daughter, Martha Low and husband Keng of Winston-Salem; one son, Andrew Vance and wife, Shiho of North Miami Beach, FL; three granddaughters, Melissa Low and Melanie Low of Winston-Salem and Victoria Vance of North Miami Beach, FL; two sisters, Dorothy Kiger of Rural Hall and Jane Vellines and husband, Richard of Spartanburg, SC. He will also be missed by his brothers-in-law, Henry Johnson and wife, Lucille and Gene Johnson and wife, Barbara of Winston-Salem and his many nieces and nephews. The funeral service was conducted Thursday, January 1, 2009, at Hope Moravian Church with Rev. David Merritt officiating. Burial followed in the church graveyard. Memorials may be made to Hope Moravian Church, 2759 Hope Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.
