- Lonnie Fred Church
Lonnie Fred Church, 82, of Clemmons died April 22 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 16, 1924, in Winston-Salem to Joe Glenn and Izella King Church. Fred was retired from AT&T and was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He served in Company 1, 13th Infantry, and was involved in many battles throughout Europe, earning two Purple Hearts and three Bronze Stars for his service for his country. He was a champion horseshoe and checker player. He was the N.C. State Horseshoe Pitching Champion for three years and is in the Hall of Fame for both horseshoes and checkers. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and a sister.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Strader Church, of the home; a daughter, Renee Hermann and husband Rick; and a son, Mark Church, all of Clemmons; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Billy Church of Winston-Salem.
A private funeral service was held.

Katherine Elizabeth Holder Barr
Katherine Elizabeth Holder Barr, 75, of Clemmons died April 24 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born September 11, 1931, in Forsyth County to John F. Holder and Ella Hauser Holder. She lived all of her life in Forsyth County. She was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.
Surviving are her husband, Kenneth E. Barr; two sons, Donald Barr of the home and Michael Barr and wife Teresa; two grandchildren, Lindsey and Kristen; a sister, Dorothy Carter, and husband Mike of East Bend; a brother, John Holder and wife Debbie of Clemmons; and special nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Union Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Justin Jones officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Union Hill Baptist Church, 8494 Lasater Road, Clemmons, NC 27012.

Leslie Eugene Beck
Leslie Eugene Beck, 82, of Clemmons died April 24 at home after a lengthy illness. Born March 2, 1925, in Littlestown, Pa., he was the son of the late Rev. Samuel Washington Beck and Daisy Lois Barrier Beck. He served in the Army during World War II in Czechoslovakia and France. He retired from L.M. Berry Co. after 27 years of service. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Lloyd Raymond Beck; and sisters Helen Lupper, Lois Hanling, Adelaide Sheaffer and Virginia Rahn.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Lou Salmons Beck; son Richard Allen Beck and wife Debbie of Franklin, Tenn.; daughter Joan “Joni” Leslie Beck of O’Fallon, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

William James Lundberg
William James “Bill” Lundberg, 65, of Clemmons died April 28 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. He was born December 21, 1941 in Worchester, Mass. to Roger W. and Frances Zink Lundberg. He was of the Presbyterian faith and had been employed with Mitchell 1 since 1986 as an independent sales representative. He was an avid Corvette enthusiast and member of the Country Corvette Club. He was also an avid soccer fan and never missed a game at UNC-W, where his daughter played. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Scott and Marty.
Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Lois A. Lundberg of the home; a daughter, Stephanie Ann Lundberg and fiance Jim Mayew of Wilmington; a sister, Annella Rutherford and husband Gordon of Raleigh; and a brother, Roger W. Lundberg of California.

Nannie Velma Hiatt
Nannie Velma Hiatt, 103, of Mount Airy died April 22. She was born in Surry County on June 3, 1903, to the late Richard L. and Irslee Midkiff Simmons. She was retired from Renfro Corp. and was the oldest living member of Flat Rock Baptist Church. She was very innovative for her age and had lived in her own home until the time of her death. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Everett Hiatt; son Donald “Jake” Hiatt; sons-in-law Andrew Lichvar, William Mayer and Roy D. Tesh Jr.; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Surviving are two daughters, Pat Hiatt Tesh of Clemmons and Sylvia Lichvar Mayer of Mount Airy; a daughter-in-law, Betty S. Hiatt of Mount Airy; grandchildren and spouses Richard and Donna Lichvar of Sterling, Va., Joel and Paulette Lichvar of Mount Airy, John and Sandra Lichvar of Mount Airy, Larry and Amanda Lichvar of Mount Airy, Donna and Jack Childress of Greenwood, S.C., Kathy and Richard Beckham of Winston Salem, Stewart and Alicia Hiatt of Mount Airy, Paige H. Horton of Mount Airy, Pamela Tesh and DeLacy Luke of Greensboro, Ga., and Stephen and Cindy Tesh of Clemmons; 16 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mattie Reeves Inman of Mount Airy.
Funeral services were held at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy with Rev. Todd Byrd and Dr. Joe Maye officiating. Burial followed at Skyline Memory Gardens.

Arlie O. Foster
Arlie O. Foster, 89, of Winston-Salem, a co-founder and retired senior executive of Salem Carpet Mills, died April 23 at the Sticht Center of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Wilkes County, the son of the late William Doughton and Mamie Crane Foster, and was educated in Wilkes County schools and business college in Winston-Salem. After working in Wilkes and at a family dairy farm in Germanton, he took a job at Sears in Winston-Salem selling floor coverings, the first step to a successful career in the carpet business. In 1954, he co-founded, with his brother A.G. Foster and William Hailey, Hafo Distributors in Winston-Salem, which in 1968 became Salem Carpet Mills. He and his late wife, the former Grace Davis, moved from Winston-Salem to Bermuda Village in Davie County after he retired. They were devoted members of Becks Baptist Church and he was a founding member of Old Town Civic Club, a member of Pinebrook and Bermuda Run County Clubs and a former member of Piedmont Civitan Club. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth; a sister; and several brothers.
Surviving are two daughters, Joan F. Allan and husband Peter of Winston-Salem and Janice F. Jordan and husband Chris of Mocksville; two sisters, Juanita Smith and husband Carl of Bermuda Run and Mrs. Billie Kern of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Laurel Walter of Raleigh, Andrea Hicks of Clemmons, Jonathan Jordan of Jefferson, Karen Jordan-Foster of Mocksville and Laura Payne of High Point; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Dr. Ray Hamilton and Dr. Karl Minor officiating. A private graveside service followed.

Roger Ralph Alderman
Roger Ralph Alderman, 62, of Galax, Va. died April 24 at VA Medical Center. he was born in Carroll County on March 18, 1945, to Roby Lee and Dorothy Rakes Alderman.
Surviving are a daughter, Amy Southern and husband Scott of Greer, S.C.; a son, Scott Alderman and wife Sharon of Lewisville; mother Dorothy Rakes Alderman of Galax; sisters Lois Ann Wagoner and Violet Brewer and husband Jim Brewer, all of Galax; brothers Donnie Alderman and wife Linda and Mitchell Alderman and wife Arlowene, all of Galax; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with Brian Alderman and Edward Richardson officiating. Burial followed in Alderman Cemetery with military rites by Hillsville VFW Post 1115.

Von Emanuel Caudill 
Von Emanuel Caudill, 76, of Hays died April 22 at Avante at Wilkesboro. He was born October 27, 1930, in Wilkes County to Claude E. and Essie Harold Caudill. He was a deacon at Round Mountain Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne Division during the Korean Conflict. He owned and operated Caudill’s State Furniture Store in North Wilkesboro for many years and retired from Abitibi Corp. He was preceded in death by a brother, Grady Caudill; and a sister, Betty Johnson.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Marzell Welch Caudill; a son, Reggie V. Caudill and wife Robbie of Hays; two daughters, Linda C. Jennings and husband Roger of Hays and Karen C. Bumgarner of Clemmons; four brothers, Joe Caudill, Jerry Caudill and Lynn Caudill, all of Hays, and Harrold Caudill of Roaring River; two sisters, Lucy Walker and Nancy Seagle, both of North Wilkesboro; and nine grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Round Mountain Baptist Church in Hays with Rev. E.R. Wiles and Rev. Roger Jennings officiating.

Donald L. Dunnagan Sr.
Donald L. Dunnagan Sr., 72, of Pfafftown died April 22 at his home. He was born in Forsyth County on July 22, 1934, to Paul H. Dunnagan Sr. and Maize Isom Dunnagan. He worked for Western Electric until his retirement in 1984. In 1988, he entered the real estate field, doing appraising and home sales, and continued in this profession until October 2006 when he was unable to continue because of illness. During his life, he was known for his exceptional organization skills, being an avid reader and a struggling golfer. He was a lifelong member of the congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Winston-Salem, and he served as presiding overseer for many years until the time of his death. He was a devoted member of Northwest Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Howard Dunnagan Jr.; and a niece, Cathy Dunnagan Peak.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Wanda Lassiter Dunnagan; two sons, Donnie Dunnagan of Winston-Salem and Dirhl Re Dunnagan and wife Merita of Maryland; a grandson, Matthew Dunnagan; and a granddaughter, Allison Dunnagan.
A memorial service was held at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses with Terry Smola officiating.

Alta Marie Owens McCann
Alta Marie Owens McCann, 78, of Ekin died April 24. She was born January 6, 1929, in Yadkin County to Jim and Mallie Robbins Owens. She was a member of Jonesville Pentecostal Holiness Church where she was a member of the choir and past president of the Women’s Circle. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Walter McCann; three brothers; and four sisters.
Surviving are two sons, Robert Walter “Bobby” McCann Jr. of Clemmons and Kendall Tucker McCann of Millers Creek; a daughter, Sharon Raye McCann of Thurmond; three brothers, Luther Owens and wife Ruth of Forbush, Harold Owens and wife Ann of Tobaccoville and Roger Owens and wife Millie of Yadkinville; three sisters, Geraldine Plouman of Courtney, Peggy Ailene Bruce of Forbush and Foy Owens of Mount Airy; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Jonesville Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Tim Lane and Rev. Tim Nelson officiating. Burial followed at Crestwood Memorial Gardens.

David Jerome Russell
David Jerome “Jerry” Russell, 77, of Jonesville died April 23 at Palliative Care Center of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Yadkinville on February 17, 1930, to Albert Blaine and Alma Grace Hauser Russell. He was retired from Yadkin Valley Telephone with 22 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Barbara, and her husband, Norman Smith.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Louise Hinson Russell of the home; four children, Tommy and wife JoAn of Winston-Salem; Thomasena of Waynesboro, Va.; Blaine of Clemmons; and Lori of Yadkinville; six grandchildren, David Jr., Christopher and Michael Russell of Winston-Salem, Erika Williams of Yadkinville, and Bianca and J.B. Russell of Clemmons; two great-grandchildren, David III of Concord and Christopher Jr. of Winston-Salem; six sisters, Pauline, Kate, Verna, Dianne, Dionne and Michal; two brothers, Robert and wife Earlene and Anderson and wife Barbara; and goddaughter Toni Smalls of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. Burial followed in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors by Yadkin VFW Post 10346.

Ethel T. Mason
Ethel T. Mason, 84, of Pfafftown died April 26 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born March 10, 1923, in Forsyth County to Lindsey G. and Ethel W. Tate. She was a member of College Park Baptist Church, the Wedgewood Women’s Club and the Wedgewood Civic Association. She was an avid bowler with the Jimmies Grill Bowling League. She retired from the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools System in 1985.
Surviving are her husband, Samuel G. Mason; two sons, Lynn G. Mason and wife Joanne of Greensboro and Gerald E. Mason and wife Debbie of Pinnacle; a grandson, Michael Mason and wife Stephanie; two great-grandsons, Logan and Madox; a granddaughter, Tia Waters and husband Dan; and two sisters, Helen Tate Sprinkle and Mildred Tate Taylor, both of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Forsyth Memorial Park Chapel with Rev. Ramon Smith officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to College Park Baptist Church or Hospice and Palliative CareCenter.

Rev. Irvin Thomas Maxey
Rev. Irvin Thomas Maxey, 77, of Pfafftown died April 28 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born November 6, 1929 in Forsyth County, the son of Wesley Earl and Bessie Kiger Maxey. H e was a retired minister of Middle Cross Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Annie Tuttle Maxey; his daughter, Judy Lynn Rutledge and husband James; grandchildren, Joseph Mickle and wife Wendy and Angela Stokes; three great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Allen Tuttle, Dominick Mickle and Brandon Stokes; a sister, Barbara Dillon of Kernersville; and two brothers, Donald Maxey of Oak Ridge and Earl Maxey of Greensboro.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel with Rev. Gene Lawson and Rev. Danny Hall officiating. Burial followed at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown.
