Obituaries for May 21, 2009

- Jackson Alfred Cumby Sr.
Jackson Alfred Cumby, Sr. died on Sunday, May 17, 2009, after an extended battle with emphysema. Mr. Cumby was born in Winston-Salem on November 23, 1934, to Gladys Davis Cumby and the late Jacob Alexander Cumby. Jack served the Clemmons community as a volunteer firefighter and eventually retired from the Fire Department as Fire Chief. Mr. Cumby was a professional photographer, and then worked for Frank A. Stith Co. Later he served as a paramedic with Forsyth County and retired from the Forsyth County Business/Accounting department and established his own business, Jackson A. Cumby Accounting and Tax Service. Mr. Cumby was an active member of the Clemmons Moravian Church participating in the choir and band for over 50 years. Jack was preceded in death by his father, Jacob Alexander Cumby. Jack is survived by his wife, Brenda Isley Cumby of the home; mother, Gladys Davis Cumby of Clemmons; daughter, Janice Cumby Lipson and husband, Alan of Raleigh; son, Jackson Alfred Cumby, Jr. and wife, Alice of Plant City, FL; stepsons, Michael Howard Kelly of Charlotte and Scott Eugene Kelly of Clemmons; brother, Joseph Raymond Cumby and wife, Mary of Clemmons; sister, Ellen Cumby Thacher and husband, Jonathan of Fairfax Station, VA; granddaughter, Caroline Huffman Lipson of Raleigh; grandson, Zachary Eugene Kelly of Clemmons; nephews, Michael Allan Cumby of Houston, TX, David Edward Cumby of San Francisco, CA, and Jonathan Davis Thacher and wife, Emily of Charleston, SC; and niece, Rebecca Winslow Thacher of Arlington, VA. A Memorial Service for Mr. Cumby will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, at Clemmons Moravian Church with the Rev. Douglas Rights officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Clemmons Moravian Church, Clemmons, NC or Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem, NC.

Dorothy Alice
Drake Overcash
Funeral Service for Mrs. Dorothy Alice Drake Overcash, 66, of Clemmons, was held on Tuesday, May 19, at Vogler and Sons Funeral Home in Clemmons at 10 a.m. Mrs. Overcash died on Sunday, May 17, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. A native of Washington, GA, she was born on October 25, 1942 to the late John Calvin Drake and Mildred Neal Drake. Mrs. Overcash was employed as a legal secretary at the Frye Law Firm. Mrs. Overcash was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Eugene Overcash. Her family includes two sons and a daughter: Donald E. Overcash and wife, Elena of Charlotte, Barry J. Overcash and fiance, Laurie Malisha of Clemmons, and Sherri D. Willard and partner, Lisa Willard of Yadkinville; and two grandchildren, Maria L. Overcash and Jerrod N. Overcash of Charlotte. She is also survived by loving cousins, family and friends from Cookeville, Tennessee and from Georgia. The Revs. Ryan P. Bennett and Hal Sonafrank will officiate at the services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Katharine Shoffner Coffey
Mrs. Katharine Shoffner Coffey, 85, of Winston-Salem, died May 13, 2009 after a brief illness at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Forsyth County September 24, 1923 to the late Tinnie Mae and John Floyd Shoffner. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, John Francis Coffey and her sister, Mary Shoffner Knight. Mrs. Coffey is survived by her loving daughters, Mary Ann Coffey of the home, Phyllis Miller and husband, Joe of Wilmington, and Alice Coffey of Nags Head; and her grandsons, Shannon and Jacob Miller of Wilmington. Mrs. Coffey was retired from Western Electric and a member of the Pioneers of America. She was a member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church. She was an avid basketball fan and a member of the Demon Deacon Club. A Graveside Service wias conducted Saturday, May 16 at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with Dr. Worth Green officiating. Donations may be made to New Philadelphia Moravian Church, 4440 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or to the charity of the donor’ s choice.

Gary Wayne “Dugan”
Beauchamp
Gary Wayne “Dugan” Beauchamp, 61, passed away at his home on Sunday, May 17, 2009. He was born on March 21, 1948, in Forsyth County, NC, to Clyde Gray and Edna Pfaff Beauchamp. Mr. Beauchamp loved racing, produce, and baseball. He especially loved to watch his son-in-law race and spending time with his granddaughter. Mr. Beauchamp was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Peggy Teague and Helen Beauchamp. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Patricia Beauchamp; one daughter, Amber (William) Straight, one granddaughter, Mackenzie; three sisters, Linda Ayers, Sue Lane, and Lois Baker; and one brother, Neal Beauchamp. Mr. Beauchamp loved his family and friends with all of his heart. A Funeral Service for Mr. Beauchamp will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, at Sharon United Methodist Church, with Rev. Patrick Welch officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, at the Frank Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Mr. Beauchamp’ s neighbors, his sister-in-law, Linda Jarvis, The Mabe family, and The Straight family for the kindness and care that they showed him. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem.

Hubert Theodore French Jr.
Mr. Hubert Theodore French Jr., age 74 of 771 McGregor Road, Winston-Salem, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. French was born in Forsyth County on January 23, 1935 to the late Hubert Theodore and Almena French Sr. He was a member of Grace Full Gospel Church. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a daughter; Angela Brewer. He is survived by his wife Florence Prevette French of the home, two daughters; Linda Gayleen French of Winston-Salem, Lea Day and husband Robert of Newton, two brothers; Robert French and wife Dorothy of Mocksville, Allen French and wife Barbara of East Bend. Two grandchildren; Rana Brewer of Lexington, and Alyson Day of Newton. Several Nieces & Nephews. Funeral Services were held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at Johnson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bobby Prevette officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:00, prior to Funeral Services. Interment will follow at Sunrise Cemetery in Jonesville. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Grace Full Gospel Church/ Building Fund: 290 Edwards Ridge Road, Elkin, NC 28621.
