Norma Cline Sloan Rogers of Clemmons went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, May 8, 2009 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. She was born in Forsyth County to Eva Craddock and Grover Stephen Cline. She was retired from ADT Security and was a member of Salem Baptist Church. She was a beloved and devoted Christian mother and “Nana,” and her kindness and compassion touched everyone she knew. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Her parents; a sister, Juanita McGee of Mocksville; and a brother, Grover Stephen Cline, Jr. of Fort Myers, FL, preceded her in death. Surviving are a daughter, Mackcine Sloan Smith; and a granddaughter, Summer Lee Smith, both of Clemmons; a son, Terry Haywood Rogers and wife, Cheryl of Moon Township, PA; a step-grandson, Rodney Yow of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Hilda C. Morrison of Rocky Mount, VA and Nancy Phelps of Virginia Beach, VA; a brother, David Cline and wife, Kay of Kannapolis; and many nieces and nephews. A private interment will be held at Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27157; or Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Robert Murray Clore Mr. Robert Murray Clore, 85, of Clemmons, died Friday, May 9, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 3, 1924 in Forsyth County, the son of the late, Ashby Lewis and Jennie Downen Clore. Mr. Clore was a member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees and worked on numerous committees. He grew up in the South Fork Community, graduated from Lewisville School and was active in Boy Scout Troup #715 for over 50 years. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in North Africa and Italy and retired from Superior Oil Company, where he was a partner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ellen Clore Martin; and a brother, Ashby L. Clore, Jr. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Iris Woody Clore of Clemmons; three sons, Woody Clore and wife, Barbara of Clemmons, Robert M. Clore, Jr. and wife, Latane of Clyde and Frank Clore and wife, Betsy of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Rosanne Strickland and husband, Rick of Winder, GA and Jeannette Clore of Lexington; eight grandchildren, Adam Frye, Wendy Coulter and husband, James, Elizabeth Clore, Jennifer Dackor and husband, Ryan, David Clore and wife, Christy, Jessica Hope Clore, Lee Clore, and Steven Strickland and wife, Stephanie; and four great-grandchildren. The funeral service was conducted Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at New Philadelphia Moravian Church with the Rev. Dr. David A. Marcus officiating. Burial followed in the Church graveyard. Densel Avery Widener Densel “Wormy” or “Dink” Avery Widener, 70, of Twin Creeks Road, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. A Graveside Service was held Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at Forsyth Memorial Park with the Rev. Charles Whitaker officiating. Mr. Widener was born in Forsyth County on September 5, 1938 to Roby Taylor Widener and Daisy Debusk Widener. He served in the United States Army and was a member of Glory Road Baptist Church. He retired from R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers. He is survived by a son, Steven Taylor Widener of the home; a daughter, Michelle Mendenhall and husband, Kenneth Carter of Winston-Salem; two very special sisters, Johnsie Widener Ryan and husband, Wayne of Winston-Salem, and Katherine Widener Fox of Winston-Salem; a beloved granddaughter; the sunshine of his life, Dorothy “Hope” Mendenhall of Winston-Salem; and several special nieces and nephews. Vivian Wyne Craddock Vivian Wyne Craddock, 82, of Lewisville, NC passed away unexpectedly Friday, May 8, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was the beloved wife of Ira Craddock. She was born in Roanoke, VA and attended Bridgewater College and National Business College. She is survived by daughter, Gail Craddock and her husband, Harry E Stewart III; and grandson Harry Winchester Stewart, all of Raleigh; and daughter, Carol Craddock Honeycutt and her husband, Michael Craig Honeycutt of Wilmington. Vivian was a dedicated wife and mother whose gifts of love and care for her family were equaled by few. She was the only child of George Maxwell Wyne and Gaynor Alderson Wyne of Roanoke, Virginia. She had special love and admiration for her mother-in-law, Thelma B. Craddock and father-in-law, Ira Craddock Sr. of Eden. She was very fond of her nieces and nephews: Gary Hayden of Ann Arbor, MI, Vicki Cox of Lexington, Nancy Cale Cox of Candler and Brad Cox of Knoxville, TN. She was so very loved and will be missed terribly by her family. A Service Celebrating her Life was held in the Chapel at St. Timothy’ s Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem on Monday, May 11, and the burial followed in The Memorial Garden. Memorials may be made to the church or the Salvation Army. Ginger Rae Hatfield Ginger Rae Hatfield, 72, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born January 31, 1937, in Janie, WVA to Melvo and Arba Foster Jelsomine. She was employed with Poindexter Lumber Company for over 36 years. Ms. Hatfield was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Jack Jelsomine and a sister, Nancy Williamson. She is survived by a daughter, Vicky Schlinger of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, who called her “Maw-Maw”: Samantha Boger, Matthew Boger, Carli (Brad) Bennett, Joshua Boger and Jeremy Boger; five great-grandchildren, who called her “Great”: Gabriel, Elizabeth, Jacob, Xavian and Vada; two sisters: Shirley Burgess and husband, Gary, of Lancaster, CA and Peggy Brochamp and husband, John, of Portland, OR; and one sister-in-law, Pat Jelsomine of Chicago, IL. A celebration of life service was held Saturday, May 9, at Salem Funeral Home. Virginia Sophia Tesh Virginia Sophia Tesh, 87, of Clemmons, Arcadia community, passed away on May 7, 2009 at her home. She was born in Davidson County to Robert S. and Hattie Tesh. Virginia was a graduate of Appalachian State College with a degree in education and during her teaching career she taught the first grade in the Davidson County School System. She had a great love for educating children, knitting, gardening and reading. Virginia was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Etta Austin and Dorothy Nifong; and her brother, Robert Tesh. She is survived by her much loved sisters, Lucille Hill and Elizabeth Burke; many nieces and nephews; and an extended circle of friends. She was deeply loved by her family. A graveside service was conducted at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church Cemetery in Arcadia Saturday, May 9 with the Rev. Ray Surratt officiating. Phil Whitfield Winchester Phil Whitfield Winchester, Jr. passed away May 5, 2009 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem. Born December 7, 1933, he was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Phil W. Winchester, Sr. of Morganton. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Barbee Winchester Hairfield of Morganton and Grace Winchester Peacock of Raleigh. A graduate of Duke University, Mr. Winchester was a retired engineering geologist and Asheville area tennis coach. He also served in the US Army during the Korean War. A longtime resident of Asheville and Fairview, Mr. Winchester had relocated to Mallard Ridge Assisted Living in Clemmons due to failing health. Survivors include eight nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Saturday, at Lewis Memorial Park in the mausoleum chapel with the Rev. Jerry Wilson officiating. Steven Thomas Crowley Mr. Steven Thomas Crowley, 58, of Clemmons passed away Saturday, May 9, 2009 at his home. He was born February 23, 1951 in Columbus, OH to Thomas H. and Rita Feeney Crowley. Steve was a member of Clemmons Presbyterian Church. He joined First Atlanta Corporation in May of 1981, which merged with Wachovia Corporation in 1984. Steve concluded his 28 year career with Wachovia as the Modeling Team Leader of Insight and Innovation. Steve’s intelligence and calm strength touched the lives of both young and old. With a twinkle in his eye, Steve was a loving husband and father and a caring co-worker and friend. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Claire Michelle Crowley. Surviving is his wife, Lora Marvel Crowley; a daughter, Alison Rita Crowley; his parents; and 13 siblings, Linda, Trish, Jim, Sue, Mary, Dave, Cindy, Brian, Terry, Karen, Betsy, Chris and Tom. A memorial service will be held 11:30 A.M. Thursday at Clemmons Presbyterian Church with Dr. William Hoyle officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 P.M. at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. Online condolences may be made to www.hayworth-miller.com. Paul “PJ” Franklin Banner Mr. Paul “PJ” Franklin Banner, Jr., 32, has joined his daughter, Jade Sheila-Anne, in eternity. He departed his earthly home suddenly on May 6, 2009. PJ was born April 15, 1977 in Winston-Salem. PJ was a cherished father, husband,son and friend. He is survived by a loving family including his wife, Stacey, son, Dylan ( Buddy) who is 10, and daughter, Grace (Baby Girl) who is 6. He is also survived by his mother, Judy (John) Rudd; his father, Paul F. Banner, Sr., ( Lynn); and three brothers, David Jackson, Charlie Banner and Morrell (Angela) Banner; numerous family members who loved him including his in laws, step sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. PJ proudly served his country in the U.S. Army (Specialist), including fighting in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He loved being a soldier and serving his country. PJ will be deeply missed by those who loved him, especially his sweet children. We find comfort that he is at peace forever, wrapped in Jesus’ love. Services were held Saturday, May 9, 2009, at Trinity Friends Church at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Robin Dixon officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial with military honors followed in Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family to help with the funeral expenses. |
