They did it! Wrestling team wins first CPC title

West’s Josh Downs wraps up a Davie opponent.
By Chris Mackie - “The King is dead. Long live the King.”
After enduring an epic 43-year struggle that often took on Shakespearean tones in its futility, West Forsyth’s long and grueling quest to reach the top of the Central Piedmont Conference wrestling standings produced a redemptive ending last week.
The Titans, who prior to this season were the only West varsity squad to have never won a conference title, finally etched their names in the school record books by claiming this year’s CPC crown in definitive fashion.
Fighting to knock off perennial CPC kingpin Davie County in Mocksville, the Titans led throughout the dual team match and pounded out an impressive 44-18 victory. The win, which Titan head coach Mike Bryant predicted in the days leading up to the showdown between the two unbeaten co-leaders, produced two other firsts for West — a win over Davie and an unblemished regular season record in CPC competition.
“I studied the matchups and felt all along that we would win,” admitted Bryant later. “I told our (school) administrators and our other coaches the exact same thing. None of them believed me.”
“But you can’t blame them,” he added with a laugh. “I said the same thing in each of the past two years and we ended up losing.”
