Competing on the road against undefeated Cary for the NCHSAA 4-A state duals title, the Titans suffered a convincing 53-9 loss last Saturday to one of the perennial powerhouse teams in North Carolina wrestling. Cary, last year’s state runner-up and a state finalist for the seventh straight year, seized control early and built a 35-0 lead before the Titans were able to get on the board. Although several of the decisions were close (West lost four matches by two points or less), only Josh Downs and Chad Rhoades were able to claim Titan victories. “We got off to a slow start and things just snowballed from there,” mentioned West head coach Mike Bryant. “The big loss in terms of momentum was in the third match. Lawrence (Manns) got beat on a bad call and that affected the whole team. “But I don’t want to blame the loss on the refs. Cary has a great team.
