E. Horne,
A. Mayse
win contest

By Dwight Sparks
Football Contest Director

-
Gentle Readers, it is no secret that the Contest Director’s passion for West Forsyth High football goes north, south and east, but he checks his pistols at the Yadkin River. You might have seen the Contest Director’s son in the Davie High band Friday night. Unlike other Friday nights, my Robert was slow calling with an update during the battle between Davie and West.
Battle?
Davie lost the opportunity to stamp its fifth straight win on the Titans and looked to have developed a serious case of fumblitis during the game. Some of the credit must go to West Coach Adrian Snow’s growing reputation as the wildest of wild men, playing in any kind of weather, including driving rain. The War Eagles must have been unnerved.
While the Contest Director’s loyalties may have been split, our contest participants were not. Most came down on the side of the Titans.
Last week’s winners?
EDMUND HORNE, COME ON DOWN! The Arcadia-area mail man claimed his first football contest win and a Cap of Caps that will match an earlier Basketball Contest win. He missed seven games in a difficult week, but he correctly picked West.
Second place? ANDREW MAYSE of Huntersville, COME ON DOWN! Clemmons native Mayse, now seeking his fortune in the wide world, also missed seven and dropped to the runner-up spot on the tie-breaker prediction.
Now for our coveted non cash awards:
CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR AWARD: To others missing seven, Ken Hester; missing eight, Carolyn O’Hara of Arizona, Avery Church, Ashley McCormick, Maggie Wilkins, Tuan Nguyen of Nevada, Paula Midkiff, Brenda Plemmons, Charles T. Crumblin Jr., Mike Boggs, Marv Edwards, Shea Crutchfield, Cameron Bovender.
BASKETBALL AWARD: To those missing the most, brothers Hunter Vaughan, 7, and Harrison Vaughan, 10, and Pat Granzyk, Amber Hartley and Mary Jo Painter, all missing 15.
BROTHERLY AGREEMENT AWARD: To Robert and Edward Foster, ages 11 and 13 respectively. Their mom emailed their contest entries from the Dixie Classic Fair last week. “They have great fun comparing notes all weekend to see how each is doing. The contest has made football even more interesting at our house,” she wrote.
Gentle Readers, the Contest Director has preached for years that the family that plays the contest together stays together. We are better than a psychiatrist, and cheaper too.
Now to our Mail Bag:
• This from Kyle Stillson of Huntersville, “The West-Davie rivalry brings back memories of perhaps an even more legendary rivalry in Clemmons between Tom Reebel, David Foster, and Mark Brandon. I once saw them race two laps around the old roller skating rink at SportsWorld in Clemmons for the privilege of riding shotgun in Todd Haglan’s Malibu as they cruised Stratford Road. I won’t say who won the race but when Todd took them to Mayberry’s Ice Cream Shop on Stratford, and had extra, extra large chocolate sundaes with extra whipped cream and chocolate syrup, ... they all felt like winners!”
• Lovely Leslie Madigan of Charlottesville, Va., “Tarheels in the Top 25. Things are looking up. I just hope they win when they come to Charlottesville next weekend. I want the new hat.”
Good luck to all.
