That’s the message to West Forsyth football fans as they prepare for the Central Piedmont Conference game of the year — this Friday’s showdown for first-place against arch-rival Davie County in Mocksville. West, unbeaten at 5-0 in CPC play after last week’s 54-0 romp over South Rowan, can clinch the conference title outright with a victory. Davie, which lost to Mount Tabor earlier in the year, can gain a share of the title with a win. “It’s the Davie game so you know the stands will be packed,” mentioned West head coach Chip Petree. “And with the conference title on the line, it’s obviously going to be a special night. We would love to see all of our fans show up wearing West gold.” Last Friday’s special occasion was Titan Senior Night, an annual celebration for the senior members of the West football program. Petree said afterwards that he was impressed with how well his senior-laden squad handled the event. “The emotion for the seniors can sometimes create problems once the game begins,” he said. “But our guys used it as motivation. They took care of business right away.” Fittingly, the star of the night was senior captain John Stamper. Rotating between a host of duties — linebacker, placekicker, punter, returnman and even quarterback — Stamper scored one touchdown on a 75-yard punt return and threw another on a 21-yard pass to Andrew Bodenheimer. He also nearly returned a pass interception for a score. “What can you say about John that hasn’t already been said?” Petree noted. “He’s amazing. When it comes to doing everything on a football field, I’ve never seen anyone better.” Offensively, tight end Brooks Ore caught a 15-yard TD pass from starting quarterback Maurice Hughes while running back Jeff Gonza rushed for 82 yards and two scores on nine carries. Also on the ground, Brad Brower ignited West’s 27-point first quarter outburst by finding paydirt from 34 yards out. On defense, Josh Peterson closed out the scoring by returning a fumble 21 yards for a third-quarter touchdown. West is now 8-2 overall. South Rowan slipped to 2-7 overall and 2-2 in the CPC. |
