All business: Titans, Brower shred Demons 48-20

West running back Brad Brower breaks away from the pack on his way to a 53-yard touchdown.
By Chris Mackie - Football is a game of emotion but West Forsyth was all business in its matchup against Reynolds last Friday night.
In workmanlike fashion, West systematically dismantled the hosting Demons 48-20 to gain their first win in Central Piedmont Conference play.
Now 1-0 in the CPC and 4-2 overall, head coach Chip Petree hopes his senior-laden Titan squad will bring the same type of focus to the field in this Friday’s battle with North Davidson (2-4, 0-1). Anything less, he warns, could have devastating consequences.
“The only thing on our minds right now is North Davidson,” he said following West’s third win in a row. “Avenging last year’s loss to Reynolds was nice but there is no time to dwell on that.
“Our mission is to win a conference title. And with our seniors leading the way, we approach each week of practice knowing that we have to place 100 percent of our attention on the next opponent. And this week that happens to be an excellent North team.”
“Excellent” also happened to be an apt description of the West offense last week as the Titans rolled up nearly 400 total yards.
Leading the ground attack was Brad Brower who ran for 100 yards and three touchdowns on just nine carries. He delivered a pivotal blow to RJR’s chances by breaking loose for a 53-yard TD when the Titans were clinging to an 8-6 lead early in the second quarter.
Jeff Gonza also had a solid night running the ball with 47 yards and one touchdown on eight carries.
West’s air attack once again produced outstanding results as quarterback Maurice Hughes completed 12-17 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns.
His top two targets — Andrew Bodenheimer and Travaughn Long — also frustrated the Reynolds defense. Having what Petree described as “an amazing night,” Bodenheimer caught eight passes for 147 yards and a touchdown. Long, who often drew double coverage, found the end zone with a 17-yard reception.
Petree also handed out kudos to the Titan defense and special teams. On defense, West had seven stops that resulted in negative yardage and got a pair of interceptions from David McConnell. Josh Peterson recovered a fumble and blocked a second-quarter punt which resulted in a West score when John Stamper picked up the carom inside the Reynolds 10 and coasted into the end zone.
“Our special teams have made big plays for the past three weeks,” Petree said. “That’s been a major factor in our winning streak.”
