Clemmons projects on highway list

Christopher Davis, age five, gave his wish list to Santa Claus, played by David Fitzgerald, during the annual Christmas tree lighting at the Clemmons Library.
By Ann Sheek - Widening of Lewisville-Clemmons Road and construction of two bridges in the area were on the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) list at Monday’s public hearing of the N.C. Department of Transportation, Division 9.
Residents from Forsyth, Davie, Davidson, Stokes and Rowan counties were invited to the hearing in Clemmons Village Hall to attend and express transportation needs and concerns with the NCDOT planning and design employees.
Clemmons projects included construction on Lewisville-Clemmons Road to widen the road from Peace Haven to Forest Oaks. Construction has been scheduled for this widening for 2008 and cost estimate is $6.8 million.
Al Avant, assistant branch manager for program development for NCDOT, said this widening project is the second part of the Lewisville-Clemmons Road widening. The road has already been widened from Highway 158 (Clemmons Road) north to Peace Haven Road; and from Forest Oaks Drive, north to Highway 421.
Avant said the Clemmons TIP public hearing was the 11th to be held this year across the state, and indicated attendance has been low at the hearings.
Federal bridge projects on the TIP for 2007 to 2013 include the replacement and future constuction of a new bridge on highway 158 across the Yadkin River west of Clemmons and replacing the bridge on highway 801 over Interstate 40 in Davie County.
Right-of-way purchase for the Yadkin River bridge is scheduled for 2007 and cost estimate is $270,000. Construction of the new bridge on Highway 158 is estimated at $12 million, and is scheduled for 2007.
Replacement of the bridge over Highway 801 and Interstate 40 and revision of the present interchange is scheduled for construction in 2007. Cost estimates for right-of-way has been $3.7 million and total construction cost is estimated at $16,200,000.
A three-mile bicycle/pedestrian Muddy Creek Greenway project in western Forsyth County from Robinhood Road to Country Club Road is scheduled for construction in 2007 at a cost estimate of $630,000.
After the public hearings are concluded and comments from the public on the TIP draft list, the 2007-2013 list will be submitted to the N.C. Board of Transportation for final approval.
