Clark Golden, W. Edwards win contest

By Dwight Sparks - Gentle Readers, this is it. This is the last time we will milk our cash cow this year. This is the last opportunity you have to claim a Cap of Caps, to hear the Call of Calls and to win this Contest of all Contests.
This national contest attracts ex-Clemmonsvillians (Clemmonsonians? Clemmonsites? Clemmonsers? Clemmonsonians?) who have scattered like seeds in the wind to all parts of the nation — from Florida to Maine, to California and Texas. One of our regulars emailed his entry from New Hampshire this week — a first from that state.
But the fun is almost over.
We have run out of games.
We close this week with our annual slate of the college bowl games. That means this last week won’t be decided until early January.
It also means we can go ahead and distribute the Christmas bonuses to The Courier employees since our grand prize has not been claimed. The football grand prize has been unclaimed for 22 years.
But what about last week’s winners?
CLARK GOLDEN, COME ON DOWNN!
Golden missed six games and used the tie breaker to cash in. He wasn’t at home for our Call of Calls.
Second place?
WAYNE EDWARDS, COME ON DOWN! The lucky husband of Marv Edwards, he also missed six games and missed our call.
Now for our coveted non cash awards:
CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR AWARD: To those missing seven, Shawn Painter, Ken Hester, Cheryl O’Hara, Bryan Mathis, Glenn Scott, Jan Davis, Michael Stone, Libby Bovender and Hal Newell.
BASKETBALL AWARD: To those missing the most, Nancy Hendrix, missing an odds-defying 18 games.
Now to our Mail Bag:
• This from Hal Newell of Cranberry Isles, Maine, “Thanks for all the great competition this football seaton. the contest has stretched us all and made us better prognosticators (I think.)”
• Lovely Leslie Madigan of Charlottesville, Va., “I have missed the last two weeks of the contest. Hopefully, my return will net a Cap of Caps for me. If I win the big pot of money, I will send it all to Ali and Kendall!”
• Rob Sipprell of Matthews, “Coming to you this week from Manchester, NH. Hoping the change of location will help.”
• Ali Madigan, “I must be the most consistent Basketball Award winner ever!”
Doug Hill, “Tough week. Money is safe. Six or seven losses will win it. The real gurus of guessing will gurgle to the top or it will be blind luck. Bring on the bowls!”
• Thomas Brame of Pensacola, Fla., “Maybe I can win some Christmas money. Plus I am leaving my current job so money is always helpful.”
Finally, we must close with a bow to our fine advertisers, some who have been with us all 22 years. You make this possible, and we thank you. And to our winners and non-winners this season. Thanks for your participation. And to Lovely Lesie and others, keep the faith.
