James Roach, G. Bovender win contest

By Dwight Sparks - Gentle Readers, if Carolina beats Duke this Saturday, should we start the rally cry, “Keep Coach Bunting?”
Sure, his replacement has already been hired, but Bunting could put together two of the three of Carolina’s critical requirements of a successful season if Carolina beats Duke. They include:
• Beating N.C. State. Done
• Beating Duke. We’ll see.
• Beating about seven or eight others.
Okay, I said two of three.
But it was a bittersweet home field farewell for the affable — if flawed — Bunting, who did everything right at Carolina except win games.
He recruited well. He ran a clean program. He didn’t hit the referees.
But that’s not enough to please the alumni. They expect Carolina to win with some frequency. This is the same alumni that didn’t shed a tear when Mack Brown left.
West Forsyth’s Titans played their final game of the season on Friday, falling to the juggernaut of high school football, Charlotte Independence, owners of a 105-game winning streak. Independence faces Davie County this Friday. Will any of our contest players be winning to gamble on the War Eagles to pull the upset of the century?
Now for last week’s winners ...
JAMES ROACH, COME ON DOWNNN!!
Roach missed seven and used the tie breaker to win this week. He wasn’t home, however, when we made the Call of Calls.
Second place?
GRAY BOVENDER, COME ON DOWNN!!
Titan hall-of-famer Bovender claimed second place, going with his alma mater Carolina.
Now for our coveted non cash winners:
CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR AWARD: To others missing seven, Roger Wise, Ron Weiderman, Mark Burney; missing eight, Neal Davis, Teri O’Hara, Pat Granzyk and Thomas Reebel.
BASKETBALL AWARD: To those missing the most — Ali Madigan, defying gravity by missing 18 of 28; honorable mention to Donna Carter, Joe Evans and Glenn Shaver, missing 15.
Now to our Mail Bag:
• This from Doug Hill, I’m trying something new with the pros — pick a winner and then change it at the last minute. Nothing else is working so will go with this new wrinkle. Go to both ‘WF’s!”
• Martin Brooks of Charlotte, “You really made my heart warm with the words you wrote about me finishing in last place last week. I took last place and now it is time to win!”
Alas, young Martin, you missed 12 — an improvement.
It gets no easier this week as the college teams schedule some of their biggest in-state rivals — Florida v. Florida State, Duke v. UNC, Virginia v. Virginia Tech.
Finally, congratulations to the West Forsyth Titans for a glorious season that saw West reclaim its old position as a powerhouse.
