Hartley, Painter win contest

By Dwight Sparks - Gentle Readers, the wheels fell off the wagon for West Forsyth on Monday night. Many of our contest players chose the Titans to win in Mocksville, but it didn’t happen.
Clemmons folks left the game wondering how the War Eagles had managed to lose to Mt. Tabor earlier this season.
Alas, you can’t score a “W” until the game is played.
That’s why we grade the football contest every week.
CAMERON HARTLEY, COME ON DOWNN!
Young Cameron missed six on his way to this week’s cash and Cap of Caps. He had to use the tie breaker to claim the money.
Second place?
RICK PAINTER, COME ON DOWN!
Painter is one of those once-every-season winners and a charter member of our contest club.
Now for our coveted non cash awards:
CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR: To one other missing six games — Hal Newell in faraway Cranberry Isles, Maine. Missing seven — Kim Stombaugh, Andrew Kunkle, Jim Bovender.
BASKETBALL AWARD: To those missing the most — Donna Carter, missing 18 for the week; honorable mention, Ali Madigan, Larry Stombaugh, both missing 16.
Now to our Mail Bag:
• This from Ali Madigan of UNC, “Okay, well at least I wasn’t a Basketball Award winner ... and yes, I will be a Tar Heel Faithful til the end ... even with all these changes down here. Oh, and Hey, Mom, it’s Parents Weekend and you didn’t come, so could you send money?”
• From Darren Webber, “Chalk up a conference championship for the West Forsyth Titans,” he predicted.
• Doug Hill, “Quick picking seems to work so I will try it again this week. I’m staying with the home teams for most of my picks. Go West! (Is that the smart thing to do?”
• Andrew Martin, “Go War Eagles!”
• Clark Golden, “I can just see my cap now. If I win it, I’ll put it right beside my John Deere cap on proud display.”
• Rob Sipprell of Matthews, “Coming to you this week from Detroit, where the Tigers just committed another error.”
• Michael Stone of Greensboro, “After taking a bye week, I’m all rested up and ready to make a run for that cap!”
• Gray Bovender, “The Heels will be back next year.”
Gentle Readers, football season is at the point where the power rankings are obvious. The good teams have emerged. The struggling teams have set their destiny.
Who would have thought at the beginning of the season that Wake Forest would have the luck they have experienced so far this season? Who could have predicted Carolina would have such a dismal season?
That said, we must also announce that we have run short of our coveted Cap of Caps and have ordered a new edition soon to be back from the carefully selected manufacturer who has sworn secrecy over the new model.
You must have one.
But you can’t win if you don’t send it in. So get busy. Pick only winners and the $2,500 grand prize will be yours.
Good luck to all.
