So Close! Dave O’Hara just misses our jackpot

By Dwight Sparks - Gentle Readers, the Contest Director has been playing fast and loose with the contest games, throwing in lots of gimmies, lots of lopsided games. He has been confident and arrogant.
He almost got burned this week.
This week’s winner missed only the 25th of 28 games. The Contest Director was already reaching for the check book to write the first football Grand Prize check in 22 years. Only the Arkansas Razorbacks saved our jackpot.
DAVE O’HARA, COME ON DOWN!
O’Hara is the manager of Parrish Tire & Automotive and was expecting our Call of Calls on Monday.
He missed only the Arkansas upset of second-ranked Auburn.
“Auburn should have won,” he said. “I was hoping to get my wife a new refrigerator, a nice one too.”
Of course, no Christmas bonuses for our employees ...
Second place: ANDREW MAYSE, COME ON DOWNN!
A Clemmons boy who has grown up and done well, Mayse is the national account manager for Hunter Fan Co. and lives in Davidson. He is a West Forsyth and N.C. State grad and has faithfully entered the contest since he was a child. He is the proud owner of several of our Caps of Caps. He missed three games and used the tie breaker to cash in this week.
Now for our other coveted non cash awards:
CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR AWARD: To two other players who missed three, Alton Carroll and Michael Stone of Greensboro; missing four, Greg Mussell, Allen Brown, Jim Bovender, Linda Brown, Don Clark, Steve Eger, Mark Burney.
BASKETBALL AWARD: To Stephanie Stone of Greensboro, missing 16; honorable mention to Rob Sipprell of Matthews, missing 13; and Lovely Leslie Madigan, Bill Burkhardt, Tyler McIntosh, Cele Shaver and Ali Madigan, all missing 11.
ROOKIE AWARD: To Jacob Mueller, entering the contest for the first time and missing a very respectable six. “Show me the money,” he wrote. “Go West.”
FREQUENT FLYER AWARD: To guru Kevin Wendelboe, who wrote, “I’ll be in meetings in Colorado Springs on Monday, but will be glad to be interrupted for the Call of Calls.”
CELL PHONE AWARD: To last week’s second place winner, Brad Bovender who missed the Call of Calls. “Locked my cell in the house with my keys. Purdue stinks, Webber, but so do the Heels.”
Now to our Mail Bag:
• This from Ali Madigan of UNC after a recent string of Close But No Cigars, “Wow, I’m surprising myself. But I have to stick with the Heels so who know what will happen this week.”
• From her mom, Lovely Leslie, “Mr. Contest Director, please not that Ali is a senior at UNC, not a sophomore. At least she better be a senior. We’ve been paying the tuition for four years now.”
• From Doug Hill, “Whoa, stop the press, a CBNC for Doug! It should not be long until the next level is reached ... but the illusive Big Bucks will remain just that ...”
• Thomas Brame of Pensacola, Fla, “If being a dad makes someone a winner, then I am in the running with a 14 year old and a 2 year old. Not bad for a 45 year old.”
• Kevin McIntosh, “Brad Bovender must have had some help picking last week from his daughter Hannah. Go Titans.”
Good luck to all.
