Rita P. Mundy celebrated her 100th birthday on Tuesday, June 6 with a party at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, John and Louise Mundy, in Clemmons.
Mrs. Mundy was born June 6, 1906 in Lerdo, Mexico. Her family moved to El Paso, Texas, when she was eight years old.
She married Oliver Mundy and had two sons, John and David. Her niece, Martha, also lived with the Mundy family.
When her husband passed away, it was up to Mrs. Mundy to support her sons and niece. She applied for a job at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.
“This was during World War II. The base was looking for someone who could censor the soldiers’ mail and who could read English and Spanish,” John Mundy explained. “Mom got the job, and since she didn’t drive she had to ride the bus to work. It was a two-hour commute one way. She left at 4:30 in the morning and got home at 6 in the evening.”
Mrs. Mundy later moved to another position at White Sands, becoming the person in charge of billing the base’s dependents for their telephone systems.
“They forced her to retire at 65 because she had accumulated five years of vacation and sick leave,” said John Mundy.
His mother continued to live by herself in El Paso until she was 96. At that time, John and David Mundy decided to move her to Vienna Village in Pfafftown.
“Her neighborhood had really deteriorated and we didn’t feel she was safe there anymore. We thought she needed a better place to live.”
John Mundy said his mother likes her new North Carolina home, especially the green scenery.
“She enjoys the flowers and gardens here. Texas is not very green, but Vienna Village is well-suited for her.”
Mrs. Mundy is in good health, although her memory sometimes fails her. She has six surviving grandchildren and one deceased.
