Army Spc. David “J.R.” Nelson Timmons, Jr., 23, of Lewisville, died May 5 in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.
On Memorial Day, May 29, he was honored with a granite monument at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem. The monument is one of many waist-high columns in formation in front of the coliseum. Each one is carved with the name and the war of an American soldier from Forsyth County who died in combat.
Timmons’ parents, Cynthia and David Timmons, Sr., and his sister, Shalanta’ Timmons, attended the ceremony and placed a wreath around the monument.
Timmons graduated from West Forsyth High School in 2001. He played football and basketball and ran track. He also played trombone in the band.
He had been a student at Forsyth Technical Community College when he decided to join the Army.
Timmons was aboard a twin-engine CH-47 Chinook engaged in Operation Red Wing, part of a fight against al-Qaeda militants in the Konar province of Afghanistan. He was among 16 soldiers and crew killed in the crash.
