Summer is approaching, and that signals the beginning of a busy season at the Lewisville Library.
Laura Gillis, Youth Services Librarian for the Lewisville branch, is busy preparing fun and educational activities for local children and teens. She is responsible for coordinating programs for youth ages 18 months to 19 years.
“When they say ‘youth services,’ they really mean it. I have a wide age group to cover, and it’s a big challenge,” said Gillis, who has worked at the Lewisville Library since July 2006.
The library offers storytime for toddlers (ages 18 months to three years) on Mondays and for preschoolers (ages three to five years) on Tuesdays. The sessions include stories, songs and crafts centered around a theme chosen by Gillis.
“I try to choose stories with a good sense of humor. We have fun themes like dinosaurs, teddy bears, holidays and seasons, but I try to balance those with educational themes also. Some activities focus on counting and the alphabet, while others are designed to improve cognitive and creative skills.”
Having a good variety of activities keeps children from getting bored, Gillis said.
“Teaching at the library is always different- I’m not giving the same lesson every day. I am always looking for..." Subscribe to the Courier, P.O. Box 765, Clemmons, NC 27012.
