Clemmons couple, 2 West staffers were on sinking Greek cruise ship

Kim and Hugh Abrams are back home in Clemmons after their cruise ship scare.
By Dwight Sparks - They thought about the Titanic disaster as their ship listed at a very awkward 20 degrees. The ship’s horn blasted the SOS distress. Passengers panicked.
A Clemmons couple, the new West Forsyth High interim principal and an assistant principal were among the 1,600 passengers and crew of the cruise ship Sea Diamond which struck a volcanic reef and sank in Greece recently.
Safe and sound back home, last week they recalled a wonderful cruise that ended in an unforgettably dangerous fashion.
Hugh and Kim Abrams of Clemmons West, West principal Penny Craver-Beck and West Forsyth’s Vickie Lail and husband Don were among the last off the ill-fated ship.
“It wasn’t until afterward that you stood back and saw the gravity of it all,” asssitant West principal Vickie Lail said. Her husband is coordinator of Paisley Magnet School and ushered not only his students but others to safety. He went cabin to cabin making sure everyone was out.
“He saved lives,” said Betty Telford last week. “Vickie won’t tell it, but I will.”
Vickie Lail bought Betty and Kurt Telford a going-away present during the trip, but it’s now buried in the Aegean Sea.
“Do I need to write a thank you note?” Mrs. Telford joked at a farewell reception for her husband at West Forsyth High last week.
