Allen Brown, L. Stombaugh win final contest
By Dwight Sparks
-
Gentle Readers, the ball bounces in the strangest ways. Our Tarheels, with victory almost certainly in hand, let it slip away to Georgetown, ending Coach Roy’s bid for another NCAA championship.
Woe is us. Woe, also, because our Basketball Contest has come to a crushing end. No more milking this cash cow until August. No more caps. No more cash. Just the memories.
It has been fun, but basketball season ended with a bitter note.
The ACC teams were a flame-out in the tournament, causing us to wonder if our teams are ... overrated.
Our final week’s winner isn’t over-rated.
R. ALLEN BROWN, COME ON DOWN!
Brown missed five games in the final chase for our coveted Cap of Caps, but he was ready for more. “Tell me that we don’t have to wait until August!” he pleaded. “That’s again for the opportunity to just try and guess what the future winners are. It is fun.”
Fun, indeed.
We get to count our money and finally take the grand prize out of escrow. It’s ours to keep.
Second place?
LYNDSAY STOMBAUGH, COME ON DOWN!
Lyndsay, daughter of our contest couple Kim and Larry Stombaugh, also missed five but had to settle for second place cash because of the tie breaker.
Now for our coveted non cash awards:
CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR AWARD: To others missing five, Ron Lovelace Sr., Steve Sechrist, Lee Binkley of San Antonio, Tex.
FOOTBALL AWARD: To those missing the most, Lovely Leslie Madigan and Mary Jo Painter, both dropping 12
Now to our Mail Bag:
• This from Martin Brooks of Charlotte, “I have really enjoyed playing with you guys. I have not had this much fun in a long time. May God bless you all and I cannot wait until August so we can meet again and do it all over for ‘08. Thanks for allowing me (a four time football/basketball award winner and a one-time runner up), to participate in your marvelous contest. I was a freshman for this year. I will really miss you all.”
• Ali Madigan of UNC, “I can’t believe it’s the last contest already. Where has the year gone? It has been fun, Basketball and Football Awards and all. I still have hope for the Cap of Caps. Maybe one day. Go Heels.”
• Kevin Wendelboe, “Thanks for another fun contest year. I can’t believe the contest sponsors aren’t begging for a baseball contest.”
• Doug Hill, “It has been fun and thanks again to the smartest sponsors on earth for being involved in a game that they know they can’t lose. Now to go into hibernation for 5-6 months until the pigskin appears. Cheers!”
• Clark Golden, “At this late date, I’d settle for second.”
• Marv Edwards, “Have a great summer.”
• And our ever Lovely Leslie of Charlottesville, Va., “Last chance ... and all NBA. I’m sunk. Went to the Carolina/MSU game last week. It was a lot of fun to actually be in an arena where lots of people are cheering for Carolina as opposed to being up here at UVA when they play Carolina and being a minority fan. It was also great to be a Moravian again. Well, until next season ... May we not win the Football Award in Basketball Season nor the Basketball Award in Football season. But don’t count on it.”
Good luck to all. And see you in August.
