Unity Moravian members help Katrina victims

A group of 13 people with Unity Moravian Church in Lewisville spent last week in Ocean Spring, Mississippi on the Gulf coast, working on four Hurricane Katrina damaged homes in August,2005.
These volunteers were: Maynard and Becky Surratt, Charles and Faye Johnson, Roger Surratt, Cam Lane, Janice and Rachel Wilson, Leslie Lewis, Amy Essex, Liz Floyd, and Dick and Ann Sheek.
During the Unity volunteers’ week, they helped one woman move into her new home from a FEMA trailer; and completed repairs on three Pascagoula homes. Pascagoula is located 20 miles east of Ocean Springs and was 90 percent flooded. Ocean Springs is 25 feet above sea level and lost about 25 percent housing.
CampVictor Lutheran Disaster Relief Center in Ocean Springs provided housing and meals for the Unity teams, and for a total of 220 volunteers. The center is housed in a former abandoned garment factory. This building was leased and renovated by Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Ocean Springs immediately following Hurricane Katrina.
To date, over 9,000 volunteers have stayed in the center and have traveled to Camp Victor from each of the 50 states; every Canadian province and many other countries.
