Tom Reebel, Martin Brooks win contest
By Dwight Sparks
-
Gentle Readers, he has toiled in the shadows for years, always in the game but seldom in the winner’s circle.
That changes this week as one of our contest faithful claims his moment in the spotlight.
TOM REEBEL, COME ON DOWN!
He has helped spread the news of this contest far and wide, last week taking our Evangelist Award, prompting him to ask, “Do I get any cash for winning the evangelist award?”
Gentle Tom, that is one of our coveted non-cash designations, and to sully that esteemed honor with filthy lucre would diminish the honor.
But we do pile on the dough for first place.
“I’ll gladly take back the ‘World Championship Belt’ from Dave ‘Nature Boy’ Foster,” he wrote after receiving our famous Email of Emails on Tuesday.
He responded with a gibberish we couldn’t decipher. Maybe you know what he’s talking about: “Kyle, tell Coach Sampson thanks, I picked IU this week. Many thanks to Clemson and Wake Forest for helping the Heels wrap up first. For all you DUIkies, Psycho T says how do you like me now? Pull out the broom baby! You can tell the elbow fired me up. GO HEELS!”
Winning may have gone to Gentle Tom’s head, but he did come back to earth when we talked about the prize money: “I will use the money to get something nice for my wife. I can’t thank her enough for the wonderful job she does with our kids.”
Awww, Gentle Tom. You also get our Romantic of the Week Award.
Reebel missed three games, and he even scored on the Wake upset of Virginia that so many others stubbed their toes on.
Second place?
MARTIN BROOKS, COME ON DOWN!
Brooks lives in the State of Charlotte. He is a relative newcomer to the contest and has had his up-and-down moments. “You know me, win or Football Award,” he wrote. He missed four games.
Now for our coveted non-cash awards:
CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR AWARD: To others missing four, Cele Shaver, Wayne Edwards, Mark Kinney; missing five, Michael Stone, John Sechrist, Andrew Kunkle, Linda Brown.
FOOTBALL AWARD: To those missing the most, Donna Carter, dropping 10; honorable mention to the mother-daughter duo Lovely Leslie and Kendall Madigan, both missing nine.
“I guess I had to get the Football Award sooner or later. I am a Madigan after all ...” Kendall wrote from UNC-Wilmington.
The other Madigan in the contest, Ali, missed a very respectable six games.
Now to our Mail Bag:
• This from Lovely Leslie, “We Madigan girls go from one extreme to the other. It would be nice if we could each win a cap this week.”
• Wendy Boling, “Good luck to the Mountaineers of App State in the Southern Conference Tourney.”
• Doug Hill, “Another CBNC ... oh, to go back and go with my first two picks before I changed them to the final pickems ... maybe it will be better this week. Call me.”
Alas, Gentle Readers, many of you complained that the college basketball games were too hard. Due to all the conference tournaments in progress, we’ve had to go with an exclusive NBA line up in this week’s contest. The games are from Saturday and Sunday, except numbers 17 and 18, from Friday night.
Good luck to all.
