West Forsyth principal Kurt Telford shocked the school last week, announcing he would leave in April for a post in Guilford County.
Group by group, he broke the news to the assistant principals, the faculty, and then the senior class.
He has been principal for six years.
Telling the seniors, he said, was difficult.
“I pride myself in knowing almost everyone of them by name. The kids that have been here four years I know by name. As I tell them when they are freshmen, we’re going to run into each other, and it’s not necessarily going to be for bad stuff,” he said.
He said Guilford County “made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.” He will have a four-year contract with Guilford, and he is only five years from being eligible to retire.
“I thought it was in the best interest of my family to accept it, but there is no better place than West Forsyth,” he said.
The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County system has sent a notice to all the system’s principals to see if any of them want the West job. If none of them is selected, an interim principal could be appointed.
Telford said he told the seniors he regrets leaving them before graduation. The seniors were measured for caps and gowns on Friday.
“My favorite day is graduation day,” he said. “One of the things I’m giving up" ... Subscribe to the Clemmons Courier, P.O. Box 765, Clemmons, NC 27012.
