Village may switch to silent prayer to avoid a lawsuit

By Dwight Sparks - The village prayer may have to be a silent one.
The traditional prayer that has opened the Clemmons Village Council meetings would not survive a court challenge, the village attorney told the board during its meeting on Monday night.
Attorney Warren Kasper suggested a moment of silence as an alternative.
The Clemmons Ministerial Association, which has supplied the pastors to make the prayers, told the board it didn’t want to get into a sectarian conflict. The ministers did say they would keep praying for the village board — at home.
Board member Chris Jones asked the board to delay any decision until the next meeting March 19.
Minister Stacy Abernathy of First Christian Church gave the invocation at Monday’s meeting.
Village manager Gary Looper said the minister’s association didn’t feel comfortable making a recommendation to the board, as had been requested. The minister’s group is an unofficial association that doesn’t include all the churches of Clemmons.
