Steve Sechrist, Linda Brown win contest
By Dwight Sparks
-
Gentle Readers, the last regular season college basketball weekend is upon us. Carolina will play Duke, and we’ll get ready for the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament next week.
That’s why we’ve posted a full slate of NCAA games this week. It’s our last opportunity. Next week, we’ll have to mix in a heavy dose of NBA games.
Last week’s winners?
STEVE SECHRIST, COME ON DOWN!
Sechrist missed four games and used the tie-breaker to claim the cash. Like a good North Carolinian, he picked UNC to beat Maryland. And except for the final minutes, the Tarheels did. But we count the entire game.
Second place?
LINDA BROWN, COME ON DOWN!
Linda missed first place by a few measly points on the tie-breaker.
Now for our coveted non cash awards:
CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR AWARD: To others missing four, Lovely Leslie Madigan; missing five, Lyndsay Stombaugh, Tommy Smith, Doug Hill, Allen Brown, Bryan Mathis and Mabel Sechrist.
FOOTBALL AWARD: To those missing the most, Kendall Madigan of UNC-Wilmington, defying gravity by missing 13 of 18.
Now to our Mail Bag:
• This from Michael Stone of Greensboro, “I gotta get a cap to catch up with my stepfather-in-law Clark Golden.”
• Martin Brooks of Charlotte, “This is it. I’m going to win for the first time. I know it and I can feel it. It will be either the Call of all Calls or the Football Award, the story of my life. All or nothing.”
Gentle Martin, it was almost honorable mention for the Football Award. You missed 10.
• Kyle Stillson, “I was brought into the contest by Tom Reebel. I was a faithful participant in this contest back when I think it started in the mid- to late-80s, and possess a couple of wins and 2nd places in the football version of the contest, circa 1989. Once I heard little David Foster won this pool, I decided to throw my hat into the ring.”
So we have to add another award:
EVANGELIST AWARD: To Tom Reebel, who spreads the joy of the contest to all his friends.
• Doug Hill, “What a week ... bring back the pros. Will the pretenders go home and the real college teams step up like they are supposed to? Still waiting for the Call of Calls.”
• Clark Golden, “I’m having no luck with college games. About ready to go back to the NBA.”
• Ali Madigan of UNC, “Just to say hello to the family and maybe ask for a little money, especially if my confidence is down and I win another Football Award.”
Good luck to all.
