Horne, Mathis win contest

By Dwight Sparks - Gentle Readers, we put the money on the line last week by going with a full slate of college basketball games. With the NBA teams idle because of the mid-season all-star break, we dipped into the college ranks to complete our slate.
Usually, college games are more predictable.
But not last week. Top ranked Florida fell to Vanderbilt. South Carolina beat Tennessee. N.C. State reversed its fortunes by beating Virginia Tech.
You never know. But we’re doing it again this week, shunning the NBA for the quickly-ending regular season of NCAA basketball. All college.
But what about last week’s winner?
EDMUND W. HORNE, COME ON DOWN!
Horne missed three games to claim the first prize, but he wasn’t home to take our Call of Calls.
Second place?
JAMES MATHIS, COME ON DOWNN!
Mathis now lives in sunny Port Orange, Fla.. but distance hasn’t kept him out of the contest. He missed four games and used the tie breaker to claim the cash.
Now for our coveted non cash awards:
CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR AWARD: To others missing four, and their addresses read like a tour of America — David Eller of Roseboro, Lovely Leslie Madigan of Charlottesville, Va., Tuan Nguyen of Las Vegas, NV., Gene Harrell of Mocksville,
FOOTBALL AWARD: To those missing the most — Donna Clark, Nancy Hendrix, missing 11 of 18.
MOST IMPROVED AWARD: To UNC student Ali Madigan, up from the cellar and missing only five this week. “I am just a yo-yo contester,” she wrote.
Now to our Mail Bag:
• This from Doug Hill: “I should have gone with Boston College instead of Fla. St. Maybe this week will be better for me. Oh, how I long for the Call of Calls, the Hat of Hats and the CASH. Not necessarily in that order. Thanks for getting rid of the dreaded pro games.”
• From Martin Brooks, “I’m coming off a vacation, and let’s hope that has cleared my brain.”
Good luck to all.
