Tom Reebel, Rick Painter win basketball contest
By Dwight Sparks
-
Gentle Readers, the ball bounces in mysterious ways.
Some win who should have lost. Some lose that should have won. In this business, you never know. That’s why we have been able to hold on to our grand prize through the first two weeks of the contest.
Keep trying.
As for last week’s winners:
TOM REEBEL, COME ON DOWNN!
Tom didn’t answer our Call of Calls. We imagined, instead, what he would have said. It’s an old reporting trick, putting words in someone’s mouth. It’s a skill quickly acquired by intrepid reporters.
Reebel would have said, “I’m so glad to finally come in out of the cold winter of my discontent, trying week after week through football season and failing to climb to the mountain top. But here I am, quite unexpectedly, the winner of this prestigious contest, a symbol of success and skill, a badge of courage and intelligence that I will cherish for years to come. I will wear the newly-issued Cap of Caps with pride.”
Reebel missed three games and used the tie-breaker to emerge on top.
Second place?
RICK PAINTER, COME ON DOWN! “Big Daddy” Painter also missed three games.
Now for our coveted non cash award winners:
CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR AWARD: To others missing three, Scott Showalter, Larry Stombaugh; missing four, Ken Jackson, Grace Hepler, Jerry Morrison, Glenn Shaver, MeMa Painter, Mary Jo Painter, Mabel Sechrist.
FOOTBALL AWARD: To those missing the most, Martin E. Brooks of Charlotte, who wrote prophetically, “I was garbage in football; let’s see how bad I am in basketball.” He missed 11. Honorable mention to Lovely Leslie Madigan and Gene Harrell, both missing 9.
NEWCOMER AWARD: To Scott Showalter, 10, of Lewisville, entering for his first time and nearly grabbing our cash and cap. “I’m in from now on,” he promised.
NEW STATE AWARD: To contest player Tuan Nguyen, entering the contest from faraway Nevada, making this truly a contest without boundaries.
Now to our Mail Bag:
• This from Doug Hill, “Congrats to my friend Steve for winning the first contest of the season. He only won it because I did not get my entry in on time, but this is the week that victory is within grasp. I will be awaiting the Call of Calls on Monday.”
• Clark Golden, “I thought round ball was going to be easy! I missed more last week than I did on football.”
