Council sides 3-2 with Methodists

Mayor Ed Brewer broke a deadlock Monday to allow Clemmons United Methodist Church to expand without a controversial street on the back of its property.
With the council tied 2-2 over the street, Brewer told a packed chamber that he almost always favors more roads in village. This time, he said the street would have created safety problems.
Neither the church nor the neighbors wanted the street that would have linked Lake Dale Way with Neudorf Drive. The village’s planning staff, however, recommended the street as a way to relieve pressure on the main thoroughfares.
Architect Doug Stimmel, who has designed the church’s expansion, said the street would help nobody.
Scout leader Denny Boyce said the proposed street would cut right in front of the church’s scout hut. With 56 Boys Scouts and 93 Cub Scouts, he said there was already a problem protecting the boys from cars that attempt to enter the existing private drive.
Brewer said that argument was the deciding factor for him.
“I came here tonight expecting to vote for the street,” Brewer said. “I can’t see exalting connectivity over safety.”
