A big finish: Cash registers rang on last days

Christmas shoppers in Clemmons did a little procrastinating this season, but they came through big on the final, desperate days, store managers say.
“It was better than we anticipated when we came out of November,” Kmart manager Steve Preston said. “There seemed to be a lot of last mninute, panic shopping, particularly the last week and final three days.”
With Christmas falling on Monday, shopping hours were limited on Sunday, Dec. 24.
Chris Pope of Don’s Fine Jewelry said his store was open 1-6 p.m. on Christmas Eve, normally a huge day for jewelry stores. Men who traditionally delay their shopping were a little more frantic, he said.
Kmart was open Christmas Eve until 10 p.m.
“It was extremely busy on Sunday, particularly Sunday evening,” Preston said, adding that toys were a big seller.
“There wasn’t a really hot single item toy like in recent years. Board games and remote control vehicles were strong. “Maybe parents are tired of their kids sitting in front of the TV,” he said.
