The retired owner of one of Clemmons’ oldest businesses, Floretta Baylin, died Sunday.
She taught good manners and dance steps to thousands of Forsyth County children over a span of 74 years.
She continued to attend the Floretta Baylin Cotillion in retirement, going last year in a regal cream-colored gown and bracing herself with a smart-looking cane.
Her daughter, Judy Baylin, and protegees Denise Bassen and Eddie Morgan, said the loss was huge to them.
Judy Baylin said her mother had remained vibrant and alert almost to the end of her days.
“All told, I was very lucky to have her 97 years,” her daughter said.
The Baylins moved their business to Clemmons 45 years ago. Floretta Baylin remained active in the cotillion until two years ago, addressing the children on the finer points of manners.
Denise Bassen on Tuesday was preparing remarks for the funeral.
“What do you say about so great a lady?” she asked. “As slight in stature as she was, she was the strongest lady God ever made to me.” She was the epitome of a lady. When she entered a room, heads turned. She demanded, without words, that attention.”
