‘Shallow Fords to Great Heights’ chosen as Lewisville town motto
By Summer Smith
-
“Shallow Fords to Great Heights” has been selected as the winner of Lewisville’s town motto contest.
The Town Council voted 5-1 in favor of the motto at last Thursday’s meeting. Councilman Roger Fowler was opposed, and Councilman Dr. Ken Sadler was absent.
Residents had been asked to submit their motto suggestions to the town by October 16. Each council member picked his or her top seven entries, and two of those entries showed up on multiple lists.
“Lewisville- A Progressive Community” and “From Shallow Fords to Great Heights” each appeared on three lists.
Fowler said he favored “A Progressive Community,” which was used on Lewisville license plates in the 1940s and 1950s.
“The Shallow Fords motto is clever and creative, but it doesn’t really identify us to people driving by,” Fowler said. “Some people may not know what Shallow Fords are. ‘Progressive’ represents Lewisville because we’ve always decided as a town that we would get better.”
Councilman Larry Sowers said the Shallow Fords motto hearkened back to Lewisville’s early settlers. “We’ve gone from crossing a river in wagons to driving down a road named Shallowford. For me, that is progressive,” he said
Councilwoman Jane Welch agreed, saying the motto shows “a respect for the past and our desire to reach for our future goals.”
While Councilman Fowler voted against the choice, he said that “Shallow Fords to Great Heights” is “still a motto the town can be proud of.”
Council decided to eliminate the word “from” so the motto could more easily fit on signs and license plates.
However, Town Clerk Joyce Walker said earlier this week there are no definitive plans as to how and where the motto will be used.
“That may be something the council asks us (town staff) to look into, but so far they have not discussed it,” Walker said.
“Shallow Fords to Great Heights” was submitted by Doug Dampier.
